About Bellefonte Quarry:

Update from Mackavus (03/22/06): I moved out of the state and I no longer frequent this area. Word has it that even though it was never technically allowed to climb here, it is now SERIOUSLY off limits and people have gotten themselves into trouble for climbing in "The Quarry". This stems from rumors that a kid from the nearby housing development fell into the quarry and died or was seriously hurt. I do not know how true this story is but it does seem that the access to the area has changed and has become less tolerable of climbers. It would be best to get in touch with someone local to the area to get the real story, or just avoid the area all together. Please do not ask me for directions to this area as I wont give them out. Peace.

Bellefonte used to be an active quarry some 50 years ago, untill the company hit below the water table and flooded the section they were in. The quarry has been private property since. The rock is almost exclusively Limestone slabs, ranging from 70 degree inclinations to almost dead vertical in spots. Although this is a quarry, the rock was blasted out in layers, which would remove a layer of limestone and leave another layer behind it perfectly intact... which means you are climbing on natural features, despite the fact that it took a litte dynamite to find them. The level of the quarry that was flooded formed a deep pond in the Upper Quarry. It is quite deep, 40 feet in spots. If you plan to do a little cliff diving, be sure to stay at the western end, the eastern end is home to sunken cars and shallow areas.

ACCESS ISSUE: The quarries listed in this section are on private property. If you decide to embark on a Bellefonte trip, please respect the area, don't litter, and be kind to ANYONE you might see. The access here is technically closed. Then again, its never really been open.

ACCESS ISSUE: The Deathstar Quarry lies on private land and climbing is currently closed. Unlike the other quarries, its super uncool to climb here. Don't do it. This really isnt a big deal anyway, considering the condition of the Deathstar. Please respect the landowners wishes and do not climb here.

Nearest town or city: Bellefonte
Directions:
Keep in mind that trespassing here is "not allowed", however if you keep to yourself, do not litter, and be kind to the locals you wont have a problem. Climbers have been frequenting the Quarries since the 80's with little issues, other than dealing with the occasional "Bellfesian" on an ATV rampage.
