Hi all! I was just wondering what was the best way to really get introduced in climbing. U know i've been climbing just a few times (because of exams and other stuff)and i'd like to know what do u think it's best: attending a climbing course or climbing with full experienced friends?
Maybe it's a silly question but just wondering....

Well, a climbing course is always a good idea as guides/instructors usually don't forget anything. However, experienced climbers that you can trust is a great idea as well. This is how I learned. I would go with your experienced friends. Just don't forget to ask questions. Besides, with experienced climbers you get more "hands on" instruction at a more frequent interval (you get more than one class, in other words) and it costs a lot less as friend don't charge a fee! Go with your friends.

I agree with what the last poster said and go with your friends if they are experienced climbers. Ask a bunch of questions and make sure that they really are experieced climbers.

mmmhh i was thinking about what u said: make sure that they really are experienced climbers.....
How the hell can i confirm that? I'm sure that if i ask them they'll say that there's no problem and to trust them......but how can i be sure?

Experience comes from experiences. Okay, too confusing. Here are some questions you should ask yourself?
To start with: How long have you known them? Are they people you could trust anyway?
Have you ever watched them climb?
Did they seem to know what they were doing?
How long have they been climbing?
What have they done?
What type of climbing do they do? (toprope, sport, trad, etc)
Do they seem compitent? (In other words, are they goof offs?)
If you feel uncomfortable with the idea of trusting your friends, then take a class. The instructor will teach you the things you should know. This will not happen in one course. You will have to take several. However, you should immediately have an understanding in the basics. When you have that, go with your friends and see what they do. Where the things you were taught applied by your fiends, etc? Go climbing with them then, and pick apart everything and ask questions. A compitent, understanding, experienced climber will have no problem being picked apart and answering questions.

Go to your local gym and watch other climbers, hang with experienced climbers, maybe get a course if there is one, reading up on it can only do good.And last but not least....get your daily dose of rc.com
