Does anyone out there have a good Whillans story? For me they have always typified what fun in the mountains really is. [ This Message was edited by: biggernhell on 2002-06-21 11:57 ]

It seems that Whillans is either revered or hated in Britain. Here is an example of a father/son exchange from a British website... Matt H offends the entire of the Roaches on finishing the Sloth by shouting, in his little state of euphoria, DON WHILLANS, YOU'RE SHITE. Matt's father reads this very page and replies: By 'eck yer've done Sloth without fallin off ! Well done ter yer lad, yer've surpassed yer old dad. BUT " Don Whillans yer shite " was not overbrite. I'd like to 'ave seen yer if Whillans 'ad been ther ! E'd 'av ended yer bliss with a sweet Glasga kiss and a gentle goodnite. Not a Whillans story, but funny nonetheless!

Here is the ALL TIME CLASSIC DON WHILLANS STORY! Don was giving a slide show back in the late 70's when "streaking" was all the rage. All of a sudden, a naked man streaked across the stage. "Well I'll be buggered," said Don. And without missing a beat he added, "and so will 'e if I can catch 'im."

Once Don was seconding a climb and his partner called for a little slack. Don called back up to him "I've got a hundred feet here do you want it all?"

Thanks guys. I can't believe that you found this thread. Its been nearly a month since I posted it. Hers one of my favorites. Doug Scott (not my dad, although they do have the same name)recounts a time from the International Everest Southwest Face attempt, when German climbers heard on the radio that they had beaten the British soccer team in the World cup final. A proud german climber walks over to Don and says "It seems ve haf beaten you at your national game" "Aye" Don nodded "and weve beaten you at yours, twice." If you'll notice, its also Don Whillans day in the "great quotes" thread over in comunity [ This Message was edited by: biggernhell on 2002-07-15 21:03 ]
