Which magazine do you consider the most valuble contributor to our sport. I know they all are worthy but which one would you have shipped to you if you were stuck on a deserted Island with your favorite rock.
I Vote for Rock & Ice because they seem to be more sport oriented, and less mountaineering. But I am sure there are all types here.
Which do you prefer?

I prefer Climbing. R&I has too many advertisements for my taste.

I prefer Rock & Ice, only because I like learning about other stuff, like mountaineering, but I know I'll never try, but who know, this is only MY opinon, lol

Hehe, they all have the exact same advertisements, and the exact same number of them in a magazine.
I think climbing as a sport is too small to worry about competition from one another as far as the climbing magazine competition goes. Climbing and R&I aren't much different in the end, and both contribute a lot to the sport.
I subscribe to both, and I like both. though Climbing costs a little more.
And a sidenote - R&I had a big roll over, and people from Climbing went to R&I, for it was bought by big stone publishing.
What I need is a "Bouldering ONLY" mag. Is that what V bouldering is? and if yes, how do I subscribe?

Check out their website at VBouldering.com they will sign u up..
It's still a pretty thin mag though. But they show lots of chicks in it and don't hung up on all the political garbage..

rock and ice for me. my girlfriend got me a subscription to climbing for xmas so i didn't continue my sub. to rock and ice. after two months with only climbing, i started getting r&i again. just enjoy r&i more for some reason.

I always try to find the newest R&I first, just because I have a friend that has regular photo contributions. After that I pick up any other climbing mag I can find and look at all the purty pictures.
Then while bored and sitting at a friend's house or at the gym I will pick up the issues that they bought, look at the pictures for the umpteenth time, and, only if I get desperate, read an article or two. Only as a last resort though.

Don't know much about V Bouldering, but have checked out the website and so far, the mag looks solid.
Rock N Ice and Climbing aren't worth the money you pay for them (good for fecal removal ) and only the pictures are the redeeming quality of the magazine. Climbing and R & I don't contribute anything worthwhile, outside of their "Tech Tips" and pictures. They are nothing about climbing. Just spray, poor journalism, and advertising. Basically, that is all they are. Advertising. It has been years since they represented the climbing community, if they ever did at all.
My two cents. Two cents from the "average Joe" climber. Two cents from a guy that looks as climbing for what it is. A recreation we all love and how and what you climb, not just 5.14, doesn't matter. Whether sport, trad, ice, alpine, boulder,..... it doesn't matter. We're all climbers and who we are is what matters. Not what we do. Something Climbing and R & I forgot, or never realized.

Actually I enjoy the magazines. Since I started climbing in 1994, I have collected and enjoyed every issue. Besides all of the inspirational photos, I find the that the mini-guides to otherwise vague or up-and-coming destinations very useful.
When my Air National Guard unit deploys me to some new location, I just grab one of my back issues with a mini-guide for that area.
Though I will never be a famous climbing athlete to grace the pages of Climbing or Rock and Ice, to me they do a great job in trying to touch on a little bit of everyones climbing interests.

The latest Climbing mag was a HUGE dissapointment to me. Nothing but Mountaineering, Ice Climbing, and Big Walls.
Its seems they have forgotton that ROCK CLIMBING is part of "Climbing".
The time is ripe for a sport/bouldering/weekend trad mag as this site and others prove. I like VBouldering but they really should have included sport climbing. It would have made the mag much more rounded and gave it more material.
People tend to forget that sport climbing is still VERY popular. In fact, I would say the number of sport climbers still outnumber the pad people, though that gap is shrinking everydau seemingly

I tend to agree with some of Wildtrail's comments. Really, half of the pages on Climbing and R&I are ads! For the money I would spend to buy one of them (Climbing's price is about AUS$18 per copy) I can buy a climbing book (eg. Touching the Void) and really read about climbing for a while, or even buy a carabiner for A$15!! The pictures and the reviews about new gear are very good though. I guess it really depends on what you like to read and on the level of disposable income one has available.
