Maybe I just have a simple case of OCD but I find it slightly annoying reading all these posts that are riddled with spelling errors. Anyone else share my ridiculous peeve?

Lol I know the feeling, but then I remember my posts are always littered with spelling and grammar errors...so much for my advanced grammar class..lol don't stress about it too much, ya gotta remember, we're human, we make mistakes, that's life, most of the time it's because ppl type too fast and don't notice it and just go on typig, ya know? well anywho, that's my two cents.. Rock On!

~*Kira*~

P.S. I did spent a little extra time typing this one..trying to watch my spelling mistakes, I made many in the precess

Alot of people, not just climbers, are spelling-challenged. It has to do with the speed at which people can type into a computer. Once you've hit 77-112 WPM, there's no going back. Apparently, it's more important to get the stream-of-consciousness down - quick! - before the thought is lost.

Check out MSNBC, CNN, and other news sites. You'll see just as many typos. The only difference is that they use a spell checker that allows odd things through.

A recent example: a story about dry conditions contained the word, "draught". And the story had NOTHING to do with that dehydrated feeling your get after a night of downing too many 25-cent draughts.

For what it's wurth, "draught" is pronounced, "draft". Like, "laugh".

I know I am guilty of horrendous spelling errors in my messages. However, as long as I can effectively get my idea a crossed , its good enough.

I type messages for conversation, debate of ideas, etc... not to prove who can run their message through a spell checker program the best.

Viva La Bad Spellers!!!!

I hate all these spelling errors. A lot of them have to do with spell check missing them but some of them are just horrible. I am in the field of education and am going for my reading specialist masters next year. I think that a lot of the problems we have with spelling has to do with phonics. Children are not taught how to spell they are taught how things sound. This is why we are such horrible spellers. Spelling is as much about memoriztion as anything.

Please don't take me the wrong way, I DO NOT sit back here and chant incantations and curses against all who don't spell so well. I think I'm just now finding out how anal I can be when it comes to certain things. Thanks for the input, guys!...

Well - it could be that many of the users of rockclimbing.com does not have English as their native language. I'm from Denmark, and although I have been taught english in school, I still write a lot of errors (grammar and spelling).

Måske det ville være nemmere hvis jeg så kun skrev på dansk for at undgå stavefejl. Men det ville nok ikke være lettere at læse alligevel :-)

how about time challenged?
I do all of my post from work, often times I am in a hurry and dont have the time to check my spelling or grammer, especially when the supervisor is coming my way
And its easy to hit the wrong key with rubber gloves on (I work in a clean room).
I too find it annoying, but I am also part of the problem

Spelling errors drive me nuts...but I only mention them when they're so blatant, or every second word is mispelled. Then I can hold back, no longer.

It's a good habbit to get into, proper spelling, and it's really not difficult...I do make them too of course, but you know, give it a quickie check over before submitting and you're good!

Now, excessive use of ellipses...that's a big problem with me...

Interuptor: I don't think this was intended to point a finger at anyone for whom english is a second language...

I personally have pretty high respect for anyone who knows more than one language, and especially to learn english as a second, it's supposed to be the hardest to learn, right?

This is aimed at that small percentage of the north american population that insists they're, there, and their can be interchanged at will...or spelled "thair" while spitting some chew out. hehe...

Okay, I tried my best to not comment, but I just cant take it anymore .. ugh, giving in, failing under the pressure .. must comment ..

I agree with apollodorus that it's not really contained to this site, and honestly, it really irks me more to see spelling/grammar problems/misuse on a news site than in an environment like this.

Heck, I dont even use caps on half my posts. Not really because I dont know how to .. but because a) it's the net and b) I'm at work and am trying to avoid having access to the rc.com domain blocked .. eek!

Honestly, the only time grammar/spelling problems on the site really irritate me, is when they impede comprehension.

Okay, just my .02 .. over and out ..
*wink*

Frankly I'm impressed with how well some non-english speakers type/speak english. If it's not your first language and you didn't happen to pick it up when you were 3 (when it's easy to learn any language, relatively), then cudos (sp? :-) ) to you!

My grasp of typing any other language is limited by how well http://babelfish.altavista.com can translate it!

I`m practically a walking dictionary of the english language but I`m of the two fingered typing persuasion, you know hunt and peck variety. I am probably a little dyslexic to boot so when I`m huntin and peckin looking at the keys I`ll send one past that I don`t intend.

I try to edit all my posts for grammar and spelling but I too have been guilty of poor spelling. It does however drive me nuts to be reading poor postings. Who was it said, sorry about the long letter but I didn`t have the time to write a short one.

People slow down and take the time to craft something worth reading, you`ll more than likely write something different and learn something as well because you can analyze what it is you are trying to communicate. Stream of conciousness, bah humbug.

Working at a school I have noticed that the spelling abilities of the students is terrible for the most part. Many of them rely on spell check on their computers so they never learn how to spell the word in the first place. They just type out how it sounds and let the computer fix it. I myself make mistakes (dyslexic fingers) when typing and don't mind those when I see them but it does annoy me when I see a post full of spelling errors.
