here are the amount of ascents recorded on rc.com:

Snake Dike, Yosemite: 101
Five Gallon Buckets, Smith Rock: 101
Roadside Attraction, RRG: 80
The Nose, Yosemite: 52

since it is not possible to search by ascent amount that I know of, does anyone know of routes in the database with bigger numbers than these?

To what end? A number of rc.com users don't use the ascent log. A large number of climbers don't use rc.com at all. Any numbers you get are going to be from a very limited sampling of climbers.

Even if you consider rc.com to be a relatively good representation of climbers in general, I still think your results aren't going to be very solid. I suspect that some users are more inclined to register their impressive sends rather than easier routes. It's those easy/moderate routes where the big numbers lie.

Edit: As an example, Conn's West has a total of 30 ascents logged. I'm sure it's seen that number of climbers on a regular weekend, if not on a busy day.

well, this is funny, since I just got in an argument with jt512 in which I was asserting that user content on rc.com does not really make good data.

I think that the number of ascents on here merely reinforces how popular and well-traveled a route is. Several people speculated that High E may have the most total number of ascents in the US, I would agree, and the amount of ascents recorded on here support it.

i'll go with high E, it may not be, but i've climbed at the gunks and never climbed the thing because i don't want to wait for a turn, someday... i'd say it's one of the most well known routes around. although if you include single pitch i'm sure there are other less talked about routes that get much more traffic if you include tr

Also keep in mind that rockclimbing.com seems to be biased towards east coast climbing, just as mtnprjct seems to be more localized around CO. Perhaps the new webmaster can use the list of ip addresses accessing this site to generate statistics on where most of the people are from. Note that even this will not be THAT insightful since we will not know what percentage of west coast climbers are on here vs. the percentage of east coast climbers.

Well, seeing as how rc.com knows all, I figured I'd let the rc.com routes db be the final and unquestionable arbiter of this question. So, first, the winners:

High E, Double Cross, Bastille Crack, and 5 Gallon Buckets!

Here are judge's score sheets. The tallies have been determined according to how many total ascents in the rc.com DB, and how many so far this year:

nkane nominated: High Exposure? 180 total/16 this year.

Whitney Gilman: 70 total/ 9 this year.

hyongx nominated: the Bastille crack... 161 total/14 this year.

apeman_e nominated: 5 gallon buckets at Smith. 101/18

i_h8_choss nominated:
Double Cross in Jtree... 170/19

hansundfritz nominated: Three Pines... 86/7

...Minty: Are you kidding?

... or Beginners Delight... 6/2

reno nominated: The Nose 52/3

dingus nominated: Jam Crack.

Dingus wins the booby prize. RC.com Routes DB says there are 15,445 routes that match this description.

well, the bastille has 240 ratings on MP.com, and that isnt even indicative of how many people have ticked it, as you dont have to rate it to tick it.
240 is definitely more than 180.

I climbed it in July and didnt add it to my rc.com routes thing. I dont really use rc's climbing log.

surprised nobody has mentioned the flatirons yet. i would think that the regular east face of the first flatiron would be right up there. the third flatiron would probably be close to the top also,if it wasn't closed half the year for raptor nesting. another eldo route that might see as much traffic as the bastille is calypso. it gets the full-on gangbang 24-7-365.

Okay, okay... Minty was a bad call. I nominated it b/c it is super-easy to find for newcomers to the Gunks. And, hey, if you count the old-timers down-climbing it on the way back from the swimming hole, then maybe.... Seriously, I climbed Minty back in the mid-80s on my first trip to the Gunks -- and here comes this guy down-climbing with a full pack and bare feet. He asks: "You guys on Minty? Good. I thought I was off-route for a while there." I slotted in another red tri-cam and carried on.

I think there is something in the idea that folks aren't going to post easy climbs like Beginner's Delight. It's a true 5-star route, but maybe too easy to post on RC.com. Who knows, I'm kinda new round here and don't use the route log feature.

Nope - notoriously unreliable. All you get doing that is the location of the ISP, not the users. At my last company in Utah, all our ip addresses resolved to somewhere in northern Virginia, where our ISP was located.

Sorry for the thread hijack, but since this thread is basically pointless anyway....

Yes, I'm sure that's true. But I like the idea of having some absolute measure that's rc.noobish for an rc.noob thread. The fact that it's almost certainly wrong doesn't change the fact that it's entertaining.

Royal Arches Route, YNP.

Everybody does that one when they climb the valley. The easy approach and easy climbing lends itself well to much traffic. The only crappy part is getting off the route. That has been the cause of many epic be-nightings. Laugh

I'll go in a different direction...

Easily Flakey 5.6 Bridge Buttress @ NRG

This thing is located immediately off the road at the most visible crag at the New. I have never seen this thing go a day without a group of gumbies or a class huddled around the thing. Maybe not the most popular route, but it's got to be up there as far as ascents go.

RedRiverClimbing.Com allows users to sort routes by how many ascents they see. This method only allows registered users to log each route one time, so repeat ascents are not included. For example, the most popular route at the Red seems to be Mr. Bungle, a 5.7 at Left Flank, which has 430 ascents. I personally have climbed Mr. bungle at least ten times, so add nine to that number, at least.

I would also venture to guess that only about 1 in 10 climbers actually records ascents on RRC.com This is just a back of the envelope calculation based on climbers I personally know from the Red. I therefore very roughly estimate that Mr. Bungle has seen about 5000 ascents. And it is a chosspile, but very very easy.

It seems, at least according to sample data from Ky, that ease of climbing trumps quality of the route. In fact, of the top ten routes in the Red, only one is harder than 5.9, and that's only because it's been retrograded from a 5.9+ to 10b. The routes are also graded on a 5 star qulaity rating. Of the top ten, only one is 4 stars, none are 5 stars and most are three stars. Two are even only two start routes, including Mr. Bungle.

So in a region with 1885 registered routes, about 50 of which are rated 5 stars or higher, the most popular route is is a 5.8 two star. That might give you a clue as to what to look at nationally for the most climbed route. Given the data from the Red, I'd echo previous suggestions of a popular Gunks line like Horseman, PineLine, HighE, etc.

I see a lot of people list High E and I have to call bullshit. Have you ever been on the High E ledge and seen how long it takes most parties to do "the move". Even experianced people can hang out there for a while getting the guts up to do "the move", you can imagine how long it take the inexperiances leader. Add the even more inexperianced people the inexperianced leader is taking up the climb and you'll see that it takes a while to more people through the climb.

To me its obvious that the route with the most total number of accents would be a sport route at a popular sport area, either a warm up or a realativly easy classic. If you take a look at Military wall on the RC.com data base you'll see the number of accents of Moombeam, Sunshine and Fuzzy Undercling (each with over 100 accents).

Now take into account that I'll do both those easier routes each time at the wall to warm up, but I'd never bother logging them in the data base, 'cause they're my warmups after all. High E, I've done once and I don't think I'll ever bother doing it again (I'll do Directisma instead, thank you).
