octoboxs look pretty cool - might look into one before long as well, though I really like the apollo softbox that I have now - pretty much the same thing, just square. Give a bit different look, esp. the catchlights in the eyes.

Just noticed this post...
I will have to look at the text file for the shot of my sister. I did mess with it A LOT using layers and various blending techniques so I'm expecting the text to be a mess since it records ALL the edits and undue/redos, basically all key strokes!. I know I used Nik Coloreffects monday morning (or was it Midnight) filter, but I also did a lot of selective masking of multiple layers,. I dodged the white on thermometer and burned the blacks, plus selectively sharpened the #s, her eye, etc.
Beyond that just a lot of trial and error. No filter by itself did what I wanted, So, as I'm finding out more and more, it was lots of layers.
One thing I'll note, is get a graphics tablet, even a small 4x6 inch one, I think mine is 5x7 and it blows even my high res laser mouse out of the water for editing speed when dealing with masking and layers.
The K20D high ISO is a bit better than the K10D in low key photos, and/or shadow areas. The K10D was (is, as it's my camera, the K20D is a test loaner for a lens review but I've had the K20D off and on since last May so I've used it enough to get more than a good feel for it), is amazingly capable in high key (hockey for instance). All in all though I'd say only about 1/3 to 1/2 stop difference in the two when two properly exposed images are compared. Maybe almost a full stop if JUST looking at the shadow noise.

A few more at ISO 800-2500 from Memphis...
Street shots aside from the groiup portrait were with the DA 21mm Limited, the basketball shots were all with the Voigtlander 90mm APO Lanthar (a manual focus lens), the group portrait was taken with the 43mm limited, as were the blues cafe shots.
The only thing I can say about the FedEx forum is, anyone who makes there living shooting at this place, should donate a percentage to the rest of us who get to shoot in dank dark dungeons. The lighting in this place was 1/500th at f/3.5 and ISO1600. Towards the end of the game I was shooting at 2500 ISO with a little more DOF at 4.5. When I shoot in Albany at the TU, a place with supposedly good lighting, I get maybe 1/320-1/400th at f/2.8 to 3.5 and 1600 shooting hockey which is brighter because of the ice! Plus, hockey is faster so 1/320th barely cuts it most of the time!

I was thinking about this when I looked at the image as well. I'm sure there are numerous ways to produce similar a similar effect, but I my first instinct to recreate that base look would be a combination of duplicate highpass (and inverted highpass) layers set to overlay or soft light and various saturation and curves adjustments. A fair bit of masking. I'd be interested to hear some of what was actually used.

Decided to try for a self-portrait at the end of a very long day of work, but only produced so-so results. I need an umbrella instead of the softbox for this sort of thing. Portraits are sort of my major weakness so I have to start scamming people into modeling for me.

I like your crop and use of color in the eyes. It somehow adds to the comptemplative/sad/tired look.
Do you want to use an umbrella thinking it will add a little more texture to your face?

Yeah, I looked quickly at my photoshop edit text...it's 3.5MB, not for the image you guys asked about, but the whole edit text for a few months. I'll have to extract the files edit when I get a chance and see if I can whittle it down to the basics.
Here are a few I did last night for the K1000 USA tour. This is something I'm wondering if the bigger user communities do, but I'm doubtful.
Anyway, this camera is taking a tour around the US via UPS or personal hand offs if two shooters are in the same town.
Everyone gets two shots, and when the roll of film is done, someone throws a fresh roll in and it continues. The rolls go back to California where the camera originated, and will be processed, scanned and uploaded.
The camera is obviously in my possession right now, I haven't taken my shots. Trying to decide what to do, afterall, it's film, no delete button and only 2 shots!
These were taken for the map shot, where everyone snaps a photo of the K1000 on location, and it's added to the google map.
K20D, 35mm T&S, tilted, ghetto homemade light tent, 2 Viv 285HVs, 1 Pentax FGZ360, Elinchrom skyports.
And again, I don't understand why, 500pixel images are resampled to look like crap. I mean 500 pixels, is within the size of the webpage, someone at RC.com needs to look at this issue!

There actually is a lot of texture already, but I blew it out because I was too lazy to retouch skin. I think I spent less than five minutes editing this time. While I'm not overly vain, I think anyone magnifying their skin that much on screen gets a bit self-conscious.
The flash was really close to my face and the softbox light tends to be more strongly directional, so I want to to see how much shaping effect the umbrella would actually have in comparison at that range. Actually, what I want is an umbrella with a gradient on the diffusion material, but I don't know if such a thing is sold. A ring-light would have been good fun too... just for kicks.
The other issue was with the physical size of the softbox and its general shape both in creating a catch light and trying to position the camera on the tripod tight into the diffuser.

A few shots from the capital, lets just say the 50mph wind gust were not really good for photography with long lenses or multiple panoramic shots. And yep, the first one is a busy mess with no focal point, sort of the point actually as you look at the styles of architecture it intersects along the way. Basically it sums the Plaza and capitol complex up nicely.

The digital camera I was using at the time was an Olympus C8080 zoom wide angle. I got cyan sky at high altitude and when saturating the jpg it just gets more cyan and unrealistic. I was looking for a digital filter for this but then on last years high altitude trip, I did not have the same problem, then using a Canon EOS 40D.

I believe shot jpg with an Olympus C8080 wide angle, at Blue Mounds State Park at Luverne MN. I cannot get the same out of a print as I can get off of my computer monitor.
