Doctor doctor my portaledge sucks! can you help??? I am making one from many various parts and am looking for good ideas to incorperate into it (other than adjustable straps). In your many escapdaes up the bigwalls is there any thing that you have learned that would just help make life easier and more comfortable. If I'm gonna build it I might as well make the Delux model 8) .

Cheers

I hate to take the sunshine away from the good doctor, but have you checked the articles? Krusty wrote an excellent article on this very subject which inspired me to improve on his design.

Dig it right here.

Mine will use aluminum and some custom milled parts so it won't be sub $100 but it will be cheaper than a lot on the market.

rock on man thanks. that is part of what I am looking for. Other than that info it would be this. Pete seems to look very much at home in most of the shots that include his ledge, has he done more advanced mods? what makes your ledge feel like home? I had a colapsable "card table {12" x 18" aprox} that hung from special clip ins. sweet for a game of cards or not always eating off your lap. Its things like this can can make the difference between chillin on your ledge and lounging in lazy man glory.

I am a lazy lazy man..... if I can make mods that will help me do as little as possible (short of extension for butler or specially trained chimp) while in my ledge I am a happy lazy man

Hey Mike: if you build this thing, (and I think you will), can I have your bed?

Dr. Piton is about the last person you should ask about building a ledge! Despite having a degree in engineering, he couldn't disassemble and reassemble a frickin' kid's bicyle. [He has tried and failed]

For reasons in no way understood, he seems to have an aptitude for climbing big walls, and why this is so remains a mystery to this day.

He suggests you ask apollodorus, who made a ledge that sort of worked. For a while. Perhaps on its third wall he has the design flaws worked out!

In the meantime, my Fish Double has lasted me nearly 200 nights, including being flagged much of the time.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Jeepers, if that Fish ledge can withstand the flagging that you have put it through, then it must be bomber! Hey Pete... weren't you asking Russ about your new ledge bed replacement? You know... you wouldn't need to replace your ledge bed so soon if you hadn't been flagging the thing all the time... Nylon doesn't like sun. I like my ledge... and I don't flag it... and it doesn't need replacement after 10 years.

Reinforce all stitching on your ledge with Seam Grip or Shoo Goo; do the same with ANYTHING else that might go up a wall and has exposed stitching. Things can never be too bomber if you want them to last through the abuse...

you need...beer holders, lots of tie-in loops around the bottom for useless crap, a couple rainfly tie-in points to speed things up,and ways to dock multiple portaledges...i dont understand why people dont do that. connect multiple portaledges...make a porta-giant-ledge. hanging grab handles to keep your back muscles from working when you sit up in the morning. a toilette paper dispenser so you dont drop your roll as you unravel some...and a pair of etriers on the side for the hell of it...like accessing hanging loads under your ledge if its raining. a heat shield in the corner to rest you stove on so its not hangin in the middle of your ledge where you can knock int othe pot of boiling water...and porn. stock your ledge with poorn and tubesocks/condoms for those lonely weeks. your lazy, you dont climb fast remember?

thats what i would build into my ledge! lol

In two weeks and five days there will be a Homemade ledge flying high on the Big Stone. Taken from the Krustyledge plans (Thanks Jeff) and put together pretty easy.
I'll make sure the Good Dr. gets a look and we'll post some pics after the trip.
I was hanging around in it this past weekend and I'll be sleeping like a baby...Nice and comfy so far but I'll reserve my humble opinion till after I made to the top.

Cheers,
I am Bill

ahhhh r&c kid nailed it. I know how to build a ledge (it ain't rocket science) I want GIZMOS, GADGETS (hell if I could dehydrate a 50' RV i'd haul the f'n thing). I do like the reinforced stiching has anyone else used shoe goo? underside tie in's a permanant attachment? tell me more about this heat shield for the stove, I have always hung mine but it makes sense to have it on the ledge.

why should we suffer with a simple ledge..... lets haul up a frikin motel 6 eh!
