Does anyone know of the climbing conditions on Tahquitz and Suicide rock? Has the snow and ice melted yet?

Right now. It'll be chilly in the shade but it should be perfect in the sun. There may be a little residual snow as it snowed some saturday night. Get there now and do the classics you want to do before it gets crowded and you need to take a number, not to mention people knocking rocks off onto your head.

yep, aside from late fall, and clear mid-winter days in low-snow years, tahquitz and suicide are prime RIGHT NOW. Especially suicide, which gets plenty of sun. Go west, young man. Between '74 and now, I've probably racked up 750 - 1000 climbing days at T/S. Conditions-wise the best day, hands down was with my wife in early January at Suicide, around 1992 or so. No snow, toasty 40's in the sun, and the whole crag to ourselves -- not another single party. The 5.12's felt like 5.10, the 5.11's felt like 5.9. Crisp, really crisp, you know what I mean?

I haven't been there personally for a while, but I went to suicide about a month ago and there have been storms since. When I was there, Tahquitz was still covered in an unmanagable amount of snow, so I would try Suicide first. bvb, I also had an EXCELLENT day at Tahquitz in January, but it was this year. It was perfect T-shirt weather and even my wife (fiance at the time) wasn't cold. We did a quick romp up Fingertrip with her leading her first multipitch. Conditions couldn't have been better! Suicide should be perfectly managable, and Tahquitz might be climbable on the right side where there is more afternoon sun, like traitor horn.

Isn't Suicide south-facing, and Tahquitz north-facing? I remember going to Suicide in the winter, and it was fairly warm.

Suicide is mostly east facing. Tahquitz is mostly north facing and west facing.

In reply to: Suicide is mostly east facing. Tahquitz is mostly north facing and west facing. Except for the fact that large parts of Suicide face South and a decent chunk faces N/NE. And a good 1/3 of Tahquitz faces South, everything from the vicinity of The Edge/Open Book around to the right tends to be climbable on any decent weather day fall-spring and will absolutely bake June-Sept. josh
