I used to climb at the gym with a wrist brace (for carpal tunnel) and I banged it up a lot, but it seemed to work out for my hand. Has anyone heard if it is a bad idea to use a brace while climbing?

I climb with a knee brace all the time. It can catch onthe rope sometimes when leading, but it's better than having my leg bend in the wrong direction....

What could it hurt to wear yours?

Hi As I age(gracefully I hope) I go to this area of the forum more and more. I climb with a brace on my elbow (tendonitis) all of the times indoor. I use it occasionally outside. I don't have any problems. It does help with the tendonitis tho'. Charlie

I frequently climb with a neoprene knee brace. It helps to stabilize my knee and prevents soreness the next day. It's low-profile enough that it doesn't inhibit my climbing, and it isn't too torn up after several seasons. A fringe benefit is the reduced wear on my knee when technique is less than ideal.

Your situation with a wrist brace is a bit different. I wonder what problems it may cause with jamming, etc. A brace with heavier reinforcement or metal might worry me a bit more than a neoprene brace. Other than wear, did you notice any troubles with it in the gym?

A word of caution: You're getting amateur opinions on the web. A doctor or physical therapist could probably provide the best advice.

I usually climb with a knee brace also, as I tore my ACL in my left knee sking many years ago, and finished it off playing volley ball a few years ago.

I climbed with an air cast on my ankle this week. I sprained my ankle which kept me off the rock for 2 weeks. Man, am I glad to be back!
