i know that climbers are transient by nature .. anyone else have a list of countries to live in?
i'd like to live in the following countries for a few years each. i'm sure the list will grow ..
- peru
- morocco
- chile, argentina, or brazil
- a 'stan in the middle east, probably uzbekistan or pakistan
- somewhere in europe, probably italy or greece
- australia (i've already lived there for a year but would like to spend more time up near the gold coast)
- spain
i would also like to spend a few years on a relatively remote and undeveloped island somewhere, but havent decided where yet.
anyone else as wacky as me?

Clmb chk since you're living in TEx I can see why one would day dream about moving;-) I'd say New Zealand. One can Kayak,climb, surf, mnt. bike, ski glaciers, get stung by those nasty jelly fish. Unfortunately I belive they closed the doors on immigration. Charlie
PS plus the kiwis might just be the best beer drinkers in the world. Put me under the table more 'n once.

I ADORE calgary, I don't think there are much better places to live anywhere. That being said, I would consider moving back to Ireland (loved it when I was working there) or to France. I love the countryside in France.

I used to dream about living wonderful places. I still think I need to pick up and explore once in a while, but I have two other great passions: dogs and good friendships. Moving around isn't conducive to extremely intimate relationships, and taking a dog everywhere would be horrible.
When my dog died I pondered going abroad, really living in wonderful places, but I love dogs too much to stop having one.
Right now I aim for some time in Canada. Calgary, specifically.

Calgary. Living in Canada is a pretty good little deal for me. One of my best friends is moving back there (her student visa has run out), and it isn't too far off from the kind of life I have here. Plus, no dog hassle. Portugal and Uruguay (I know I am not spelling that right . . .) don't have a plethora of Australian Shepherds running around. :)

first tip if you want to move to chile or argentina - don't refer to them as chile/argentina. argentina and the rest of south america don't seem to get along too well. if you want to live in a 'stan, i would look at either kazakhstan(almaty) or kirghizistan(bishkek). tashkent in uzbekistan is pleasant enough but extremely hot and the government is quite oppressive - you are very unlikely to be able to live there unless you happen to work for an american company doing a joint venture with the uzbek government.
i guess i like knowing the USA is here, but i am happier when I am not in it. i prefer to stay completely transient and not really be based anywhere, but if i have to my choices are:
1. chile(santiago area, maybe vina del mar)
2. australia(just about anywhere)
3. argentina(mendoza)
4. czech(prague)
5. indonesia(lumbok)
6. new zealand(just about anywhere)
7. colombia(bogota or cartagena)
8. south africa(cape town)
i'll live just about anywhere for a year. currently i am awaiting word about whether or not i am moving to siberia for 6 months. fingers crossed.

Wow! Andrew is well-travelled! Wish I were.....
Say what you want, but it's hard to beat the Great White North and Merrica - I am priveleged to be a citizen of them both.
The United Nations has consistently picked Canada as one of the top, if not THE top, countries in the world in which to live. I believe their criteria is based on health care, education and standard of living.
Yeah, we're having our problems - especially in education and health care. Isn't everyone? And we sure as hell pay a lot more tax than the Merricans.
But the Great White North is a pretty swell place, all other things being equal. You don't have to worry about people hurting you, crime is against the law....
"How do you get a hundred Canadians out of the swimming pool on a swelteringly hot day in August?"
"Excuse me, everyone? Would everyone please get out of the pool?"

in some ways, i think the usa has one of the worst standards of living for any developed country. we all work too damn much(except those of us posting here all the time i guess - we just pretend to work too much). i have found canada to be slightly less stressful to work in than the us, but not by much.
i love working in south america, africa, and asia. 4-6 weeks of vacation standard is a requirement as far as i am concerned - what is the point of having wealth if you never have time to use it? in my favorite places people work hard when they have to, but do a much better job of kicking back when they don't. the lifestyle is so much more laid back and geared towards living instead of working. when i compare going out to dinner in denver(get in, get out, fast) vs dinner in mendoza argentina(come in, have a drink, eat an appetizer, have some wine, eat dinner, have some more wine, sit back and tell stories for awhile) i get ready to book a ticket and head south again.

Lived in most. Sicily I was only there for a week, but lived in France for roughly a month (Font), Italy for a good while, England for 2 yrs (and by proxy Wales and Scotland) - Most of my time in the US was NY, AK, CA, IL, and FL. The rest were mostly run throughs (weeks or few days)
