How come boulderers don't wear helmets? It seems like bouldering has a lot of potential for head injuries. Would it be too uncool to wear a helmet?

You should always wear a helmet when having sex as well. Got a brick wall at the head of your bed--or a hardwood headboard? Splinters hurt. Is your bed more than two feet above a tile floor? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, having sex without a brain bucket is simply an accident waiting to happen.

The only people who wear helmets are those who believe they have brains to protect. Strangely, boulderers use crashpads which seem to protect only their feet and a$$es.

Of course, I'm just poking fun.

Bouldering is supposed to be as equipment-free as possible.

I suppose if you're doing highballs without spotters or crashpads, it might be reasonable, but then, the helmet isn't designed for that anyway. Get a crashpad, get some friends, and you'll not have an issue. Next!

Nah, you don't need a helmet for bouldering. Just bring plenty of brewskies with you to the boulders so that even if you do smack your noggin, you simply won't care. 8)

most of the time the helmets are made to keep rocks that are falling from hitting you in the head...As often bouldering routes are short and pretty clean this is usually not a worry...

Maybe you should go shine your helmet and figure it out!

I believe the appeal and popularity of bouldering is built on the fact that it is as pure to primitive climbing as it gets, no gear, equipment, etc. The helmet's main purpose is to prevent any head injuries from falling rocks from above which is prevalent in alpine and/or big wall climbing. I don't think the intention of the helmet is to protect your noggin from falls, but to each his own IMHO.

To sum up all the high and nobel answers so far:

Yes, we are too cool to wear helmets.

NEXT!

Seriously, we're too cool to wear helmets. That's the truth.

if you need a helmet on a boulder, it is time for you to get some good spotters. You will be still cool, and your friends can watch you sending your sick project, heh heh
