Mort Hemple. Anyone ever smoke banana peels, or skins of unsalted peanuts, or trip on nutmeg? Just curious. I climb sober. The risk is just too much...in my opinion. I guess I wouldn't really feel too comfortable with a stoned belayer either. However, nothing against those who do enjoy a little herbal medicine either.

Who was the climber that used to solo while tripping and wearing a shirt that read "blotter is my spotter"?

I have a tough time calling anyone the best [blank] of all time, but I think Jack Marshall is worthy. I think he cuts and styles his own hair whilst under the influence too.

"dude, you seen my scrib?"
figures, since the dude can't climb trad, he'd rather get stoned.
HAHAHA!!!1
There is a difference between can't and choses not to. Last time I went trad climbing I lead and hauled every pitch of the best trad route in the world, the Nose. Not free but no aid slings and I didn't even get a pump!!! After spending 18 seasons on dummy domes in low angle wasteland I decided to climb on steeper rock and get strong. By the way I leaving right now for the airport to fly to Spain to go "SPORT CLIMBING" on some of the finest limestone in the world. HAHAHA!!!1 I hope I can find a hash bar in Barcelona.

Most of the more accomplished climbers that I know fall into two camps...

1. Really, really into getting really stoned/drunk. Often. And a lot.
2. Rarely if ever touch the stuff.

Most of the people from the second camp are in recovery for their addictions though.

Is it an addictive personality thing? I think so.

This is an interesting statement. I don't think it's entirely true, but you will be hard pressed to find a climber who won't drink around the campfire at night. I've gotten into the habit of bringing an extra 12 pack of beer beyond what I can drink to give to anyone else who lacks my foresight.

I've also been rather shocked by the sheer percentage of climbers who have at least some prior drug use history. I have yet to speak to a climber about weed, without them having stories about being baked.

I'm not sure why the strong correlation between climbing and drug use. Perhaps we are just more open in discussing it?

I NEVER rope up when stoned. Won't rope up with someone who is. When a harness is involved, i climb strictly sober. It's prudent.

I puff when the day is over and i'm kickin back after dinner by the fire crackin' jokes with my bros. Sometimes i'll go boulder an easy circuit and blaze.. burn my ass to the ground on rest days, but on project days.. i wait till i send for a celebratory bowl or hit the sympathy pipe when i get skunked.

be smart with your drugs kids. (tho i hate lecturing)

I think Melissa's referring to a level of climber that's well above us, hardcore tradmen and aid gods. And from the ones I've met in Yosemite, Melissa's assessment is right on the money.

Last weekend our descent involved taking a paved trail that was exposed and from which you could fall to your death if you were klutz enough to fall and then roll off of it. I had to decline the summit beer that my partner had packed for me for fear of doing just that. The professional stoner types that can function at such a high level when "enhanced" are a mystery to me, but I don't doubt that it's true.

Hmm, interesting points, Trav and Melissa.

I don't smoke anything, at all, and never have, and I don't often drink around the campfire (although the latter could be due to my usual distaste for beer. Yeah I said that!)

But whatever other people do with their bodies and chemicals is nunna my business...

to each their own, its the thrill of the sport to push the edge...
now that said, if i'm on the sharp end, i want the non-"Enhanced" LUCIDLY CONSCIOUS and un-cns-depressed individual. if you want to get baked and sloshed afterwards, ill toss a few pints back with you, but no matter what anyone says, climbing comes down to you taking your own life into your own hands, both figuratively and literally.... you make the decision....

trippin' on acid is not being stoned. They supplement each other nicely, but I've never heard of "stoned on LSD", just "getting stoned while on acid"

anyways, stoner climbers rule...too many to list

Wrong. I climbed the hardest, boldest lines of my life one day on shrooms. I am not saying I am proud of this, nor am I spraying. My hardest boldest lines are I am sure a joke to many. I am just saying people do this.

edited for clarification: None of this was roped or with gear - that would have probably made it too much to handle. Far easier to just focus on climbing.

Some of the best get high, some don't. I think if you thought about it a bit, you'd *realize* the answer. It's even done up in a Jeremy Collins cartoon in Alpinist 2 or 3.

As for LSD, which was fun at the time but which has left me with a lingering psychosis and sense that the world is fundamentally rotten -- I climbed Hobbit in a Blender (V5) and 3-Star Arete (V3), and the V4 left of 3-Star Arete at Hueco, on LSD-25, in running shoes. I was 17. I didn't give a shit. When I was done I tried to eat a banana, but was laughing so hard I spit it up all over the lip holds of Hobbit. I'm pretty sure they could hear us howling like banshees down at the ranger station, but they never sent anyone up to investigate.

Also, last time I tried to climb while booming, I lost interest in the boulders after about an hour, went down to this murky little stretch of beach on a reservoir, jumped into the opaque waters, and sifted around through the mud with my hands. Then I had my girlfriend bury me in the sand on the beach, and I pissed all over myself, covered thusly, because she told me to--because she said it was warm, which it was.

Proud.

innom.... .. great stories...... reminds me of back in '80? was shrooming with Joe Hedge.. we wander up to the Pirate on Suicide Rock.. 80' of A1 stoppers is a safe thing to climb, yes? That was Joe's lead.. mine was the 2nd pitch that starts A0 stoppers to 5.8 fun.. damn that granite felt extra pristine and sparkely....... swirly.. ..

'shrooms can have a varying effect. like you wanting to wallow in the mud peeing on yourself instead of climbing? ...I recall a warm summer day in '79 with Freriks and FrebBob, 'shroom tripping pretty hard at the base of Tuolumne's Get Slick. For some reason I was content just to sit on that little 3rd class ledge 50' off the ground and soak up rays. ..watch clouds .. .. never did rope up....

maybe highjack this thread, people. let's hear of .. altered states? everybody's got a great story... even sober ones...
