In reply to: So I know this is kind of off-topic, but man, Katie Brown couldn't write her way out of a paper bag. Not off topic and my thoughts exactly.

In reply to: Walk away from the Dark Side Jay. You could become a far better climber. The "next projects" exist in trad climbing and bouldering too. I heard that Jay only likes to climb trad when he also gets to work on his tan.

Interesting thread in the breadth of its passion. I hope that all of those professing to be anti-Tori know that they are further aiding her 'climbing career' by posting, as all publicity is good publicity. I could name a few people whom all of you certainly know that used to write scathing articles about themselves or their products to create publicity because they knew the mags loved to print that kind of stuff. Perhaps Tori acts the way she does in order to further her career? Maybe, she's out there dickering with gear and soloing slick granite slabs while nobody is watching and then playing up this "precocious teenybopper" image in order to garner publicity. Who knows? But whatever she is doing, or not doing, sure seems to be working. Flame on! "The only thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about." - Oscar Wilde

In reply to: a self serving attention seeker who will use weapons of mass publicity to further her cause. Oh my god! A climber who is self-serving and uses publicity!? It's just so shocking. Gimme a break, people. I didn't read the article (I just look at the pretty pictures in those mags), but who really cares. Plenty of climbers are eqomaniacs who use publicity to serve there own ends. If you don't like it, ignore it.

This is my first post here and I'm just defending Katie. She is super nice. Her reputation at the Red is stellar and everyone cares for her a great deal. Tori on the other hand has claimed the Red as her home crag and her reputation is one of a spoiled selfish egotistical brat. Granted, Katie was such a sweet young girl that the stories of her genuine personality...at a VERY young age abound. There was another young phenom here who was similarly a young sweet kid. So, there were big shoes down here to fill. Tori is incapable of coming close. Partly because, in my opinion, she is an average teenage brat. That's what teens do. They are brats. Katie was extraordinary...and still is.

I'm sure Katie is really nice. I met her once. It's just... you know... the article, know what I mean?

gumbychick wrote, “THIS IS MY FIRST POST HERE AND I'M JUST DEFENDING KATIE. SHE IS SUPER NICE….” Katie’s wonderful personality has no correlation with her writing skills. The most poignant criticism during this discussion has focused on the poor writing quality of Climbing and its contributing staff (or freelance contributors). Hey, most people I meet consider me to be “super nice,” this does not mean I deserve a Pulitzer.

I think it's important to note that the article was written by Katie Brown (climbing wunderkind circa 1998?) who has a particular view on exceptional young female climbers. It definitely gave the article an interesting bias. I agree that the article wasn't exceptionally well written but I don't usually read Climbing for the strength of it's articles. I also believe the introduction to the article mentions that this was Ms. Brown's first writing assignment for a major magazine since graduating from journalism school. Finally, although I'm only going on perceptions formed from reading the article, I get the impression that Tori's parents have worked hard at forming the person that Tori has become. It sounds like they are incredibly driven and are raising her to be the same. The portrait painted in the article is definitely not the most flattering.

In reply to: I also believe the introduction to the article mentions that this was Ms. Brown's first writing assignment for a major magazine since graduating from journalism school. Yes, it was her first assignment since receiving her journalism degree. Also, no one should receive an assignment that major as their first published piece. On top of that, anyone that makes it through four years of college and receives a degree in journalism should have waaaaaay better writing skill than Katie. The piece was bland, boring, and simplistic. I read it while sitting on the can and now that I think of it I should have used it to wipe my a$$.

Hey, most people I meet consider me to be “super nice,” this does not mean I deserve a Pulitzer. Neither does your pedantic writing style make you a lousy climber. My points in focussing Katie's personality were to illustrate why Tori is viewed as such an abnormally bratty young climber and to defend Katie in a thread that I perceive as being rife with inuendo that she intentionally flavored her article to make Tori look like a brat. Tori acts like a brat.

WHat tucsonalex should have said is that 'Katie is Super Nice... but I should have used her article to wipe my a$$.' That would be ok :D

KB was certainly writing at a higher level than you were capable of criticizing her. I never claimed to be a good writer, and I don't think anything I could turn out would be worthy of a professional publication. BUT, seeing as how Climbing IS a proffessional publication I know there are plenty of people out there who are capable of submitting something far superior KB's mindless banter. KB has now had a handfull of articles published by Climbing, I read the Tori Allen piece in it's entirety. The last couple I tried to read but I could not get past the first few sentances. From now on anything I see with her name on it I won't give a second glance.
