I am starting grad. school at VT in the fall and wanted to know if there is any local climbing. Also, I noticed that VT doesn't have a climbing wall or gym in town, is this true?

Thanks

The New River Gorge is only 100 miles from Blacksburg.

Whatever you do don't go to iron gate... just went there today to see what it was like and the place is not worth it. You have to risk life and limb just to get to the climbing(a hike up a 60-80 degree scree-loose boulder-mud slope overlooking the highway)... which is only so-so. Not only that, the hardwear is getting old. I climbed a big roof route called clown attack in the rain only to discover that the last bolt on the roof (the nut part) had almost rusted all the way through despite the stainless steel hangars  . GO TO THE GORGE!

I realize that The New is close, I just wandered if there was a good after work/school crag around.

Thanks

There is a crag called Bozoo (i'm not sure how to spell it, pronounced Bo-Zoo) about 30 min away from campus. Just ask the people at the local mountain shop. It's the same type of rock as the New, and there are good quality routes.

I'm at VT, if you wanna climb sometime, hit me up or send an email to the climbing Discussion List [CLIMBING@listserv.vt.edu]. Bozoo is nice for an afternoon trip or part of a day, and there is a small bouldering gym in christiansburg. The buildering (on certain buildings) is good for an after class pump, too.

Excellent buildering at VT.
My fingers were as strong as they have ever been traversing the gym on fingery hokiestone (dolomite/limestone) between classes. Also found many hidden out of the way buildering routes to amuse the mind and forearms.
Bozoo has great bouldering and sweet trad leads on high quality stone. Let me know when you are in town for a bozoo day.
The NRG is the real stuff, and at just over 2 hrs away, consider yourself a local to one of the best single-pitch crags in the USA.

Don't forget the Bouldering at McAfee's and the one time trip to Mountain Lake bouldering! I am sure Mark will show you around, and once you get here you will meet many local climbers, there are tons of us around. Check out the local areas, they are all posted on this site.

Thanks again for the info, I'm looking forward to sampling some fine east coast rawk. I'll be sure to get in touch with people when I get out there in August.

Hey guys. I wasn't at all into climbing as an undergrad at VT, but I may know of two spots in town that could be some fun to play around on.
I make no guarantees because it's been so long since I've been in Blacksburg and I wasn't looking with a climbers eye.

Look behind Blacksburg High School. There was a small cut into a hillside exposing some rock

Check out the front yard of the Jehovas Witnesses church or whatever on Givens Lane. I can recall a really big boulder there.

let me know if either of these places are any good, or conversely, let me know if I wasted your time by having you bike out there for nothing.
