hey i do yoga twice a week, and it is totally amazing. I am way more flexable, and lifting my leg that high for that one amazing grip is no where near as hard as i thought it was. Stick with it, plus its ton of fun! good luck with the yoga, Luv from Canada Nicki

Any Yoga is good. Just go to the class and learn the moves and do it at home one other day during the week.

I used to do yoga every night pretty religiously... and I felt GREAT.
Now I am not finding the time... or time management to continue this.
Once a week would help though. The streching is intense, so it will def. be beneficial. You wont believe what its like. If you are new to it... the stretching at first will be so intense you will prob. be sore the next day.

I'd urge novices to become familiar with the poses before practicing on your own. A qualified instructor will be able to correct your poses so you are getting the most benefit, as well as not potentially hurting yourself.

I used to do yoga once or twice a week. Results will be slower the less often you practice, but you'll get them. Aside from increasing my flexibility, I learned how to breathe and relax while in strenuous/uncomfortable positions. I find that to be one of the best things that's transferred to my climbing.

That said, I'm currently practicing yoga about once every six months. (I'd insert an emoticon here, but they're not really my thing.)

I guess any exercise that builds flexibility and centers your energy *has* to be great for climbing.

Has anybody else tried other things other than yoga?

I've been learning tai chi, and have found that just going over the forms before a day or night of climbing totally improves my strength. Maybe that whole inner-outer strength balance thing. It only takes a few minutes to do before a climb, and is really easy and non-impacting to learn... (and if uncoordinated me can learn tai chi... so can you)....

I've always wanted to learn some Tai Chi... especially the pushing hands stuff.

Don't like spending money on lessons though.

How often? Going two times a week will probably get you up to speed on proper form and alignment pretty quickly. The schools that most emphasize form are Iyengar and Anusara. Find a teacher who explains alignment very precisely. If you go into a class, and the instructor is just saying "Do Triangle pose," and expecting everyone to just do it, look for another teacher. A good teacher will start off with an explanation of how your feet and toes are set up, how your knees are positioned in relation to your ankles and hips, etc., etc. And they will do it for every single pose.

Once you are clear on all the formal elements, then you can practice on your own or go to a class with a less experienced teacher--you'll be able to monitor your form yourself.

Be careful, though--yoga is addicting. I like to do it 5 times a week. Keeps my body flexible and my mind very still and focused.
