I came across this route last weekend that looked pretty interesting but some of the holds were obviously chiseled. I couldn't actually reach the starting holds though (being pretty short like I am this happens a lot) so I was wondering if it is ok to add another chiseled hold so that I can do the route too? I don't see how one more chiseled hold could make this route look any worse and would open it up to many more climbers. What do you think?

Chipping is pretty lame in my opinion. Just because the route is already manufactured doesn't mean you should make it worse. If you have to climb the route, how about a pile of cheater stones?

Sure, that is a great idea! Actually it would be best to just bolt a step ladder to the rock until you can get to holds that are are perfect for you to climb on. And any time along the route there is a section that you can't climb-just chisel some more holds. Remember any odd or even number of wrongs can make a right.

T1. i have jet to see a route where i couldnt reach the starting holds. and im not a high person. even a friend of mine whos like 1m50 has no problems. and, no, making new holds is bad. even if there already are artifical ones.

Well everyone knows this started as a troll but seriously ANY climber should feel free to add more chiseled holds to an already chiseld route if this is what's required to bring it down to his level. One "hole" deserves another ...... Maybe if chipping is handled this way then chippers will have less motivation to start it in the first place ......

That is a novel idea though. Sink to their level and chisel it down to a 5.2. Or maybe that chisel would be better used to leverage their brain from their skull. Jeff

sideways... Don't listen to the off hand jerks. How do you chisel? I haven't found the right tools yet my my Yosimite hamer is a tad light and a piton usually bends. What do you use?

Hand tools pale by comparison when you can just blow the whole thing up - and then climb the rubble.

Should this be moved to the "chiseled holds" forum? How about putting a rock down and stepping off of it? Stepladder? Partner boosting you up? Lawn chair? Booster chair? Platform climbing shoes? Rapping down and pre-fixing a sling to grab? Stick-clipping and rope-pulling? BTW: a Bosch Bulldog will make those special finger sized holes for you just right. Where did you say you were drilling? Yosemite? Options too numorus to list.
