Be honest...Is there a great, must have, climbing video out there?
What do you think is must have and why?
I need your advice. Thanks

Dude,
I think that Masters of Stone V is the most incredible climbing video I have ever seen or imagined. It has a tribute to Dan Osmond in it that features some of his roped jumps, but even more incredible is some of his climbing. He's free-soloing a 5.11 climb so fast that it looks like the video is on fast foreward.

This video is way awesome. If you dont want to buy it, find someone that has it, and borrow it. It's freaking incredible

I'd have to say Veritcal Limit for the following reasons
1. Action- everyone likes action!
2. realisum- why would you want to see a fake movie like Saving Privet Ryan? Vertical limit shoes the reality of climbing
3. Exlent Gear- After seeing veritcal limit, I went out and got a full set of metolius cams and an Arc'teryx climbing suite
4. New techniques-We all learned and 2 cams are safer then one.
5.More techniques-I can now do aid climbing dynos as well as ice climbing dynos

There you have it, thats why Veritcal Limit is my fav. Movie

hasta la beaver, eh?

you MUST be joking about vertical limit. but if not, here are my reasons why i dont like that movie.

1. i will agree with you here, there was good action

2. that was not reality. mabye a few parts, but not very much.

3. metolius cams are good, bd camalots, tech friends, and aliens are better cams.

4. it is common sense, 2 cams are better then 1.....must be a real genius to figure that one out.

5. since when does aid climbing require dynamic moves? and how would this movie teach you technique?

Masters of stone v kicks ass

the part when the avalanche swipes the guy over the cliff, and the rope is haning out of reach. She pulls out a cam and it's just out of her reacher, so she dyno's and sticks the cam in then heroicly swings over to the rope.

First of all, anyone who knows anything about climbing knows that Vertical Limit is about the most unrealistic climbing movie you'll see. Don't get me wrong...the action rocked! But I'm sorry, uh uh, no way, that movie is so fake. I would have to agree and say that Masters of Stone V. However, why watch a movie when you can actually go out and climb!!?? If you're looking for a good flick though, check out Endless Summer. If you like surfing, this movie rocks!!

NO!.....well maybe "Hard Grit". Otherwise every climbing video I have ever seen made me want to nuke whomever invented the video camera. No plot, no craft, just dudeboys hucking meat to bad rap music.

Hrumph!

Masters of Stone V
Why?
Because everyone in it is hard core!
About the only time that a rope is used in it is when Dan Osman does his 1000' fall off Leaning Tower.
Hard Grit is cool too!
Why?
Because those guys have big cahones'

By far, the best climbing video you'll ever get your hands on is the only shot of me climbing.

High suspense! It's me, on top rope, climbing a 10d and falling three or four times! Now THAT is hard core! Everyone wants a copy.

Base Climb is the One True Climbing Video. All the rest are just pretenders. Much better to spend that money on chalk, or weed, or Krusty Demons of Dirt.

'Hard Grit' is pretty good too, but after the initial sequence it kind of tapers off. A friend of mine in Boulder screened 'Ascending Rhythms' (bunch of old school Yosemite legends doing classics in the Valley) and that was nicely filmed, too. But a little too soothing for my tastes

Uncommon Ground is a must. Its a video on climbing in the northeast U.S has footage of Henry Barber, Dave Graham, Jim Surette, Joe Kinder, Brittany Griffith. The video is incredible killer music (not rap), killer routes trad, ice, sport, bouldering.

honestly, the best I've seen is "El Capitan" with footage of some old-school, hardcore climbers making an ascent of The Nose. This film (shot on film, not video) brings together all of the thrills & chills of what climbing is about with great pendulums, guys bashing away in desperation on pins and some incredible free-climbing in old boots! If you want to see a real film about climbing, this is the ONE!

I have a relatively large collection of climbing videos, including some great old footage of Yosemite.

For the vote of my favorite though, I'm going to go with any video from the Michael Reardon series.

Great shots, Great tunes, Great format
(a 3rd Sport, a 3rd trad, a 3rd bouldering)Not just the hard stuff that we all salivate over and only a few of us can do…but routes from 5.6 on up. Awesome stuff!

The website http://www.frontrangebouldering.com is having a poll on what is the best bouldering video ever made. For anyone who is wondering, Solutions is a video that focuses on bouldering in the front range.

Masters of Stone V gets my vote, I haven't seen many others except for a few North Face-Mountain Zone expedition films with Alex Lowe, Lynn Hill, Beth Rodden and so on.

I agree that Masters of Stone V is good, but I have to correct tenn_dawg. That was not a 5.11 that Dan Osmond speed soloed. It was a 5.7. That is how he was able to speed solo it. It was indeed impressive though. Too bad the man went to extremes and killed himself.

As far as Vertical Limits goes, I disagree that it was a good movie. It was extremely unrealistic. If this movie is what got you started climbing, then you might be disappointed.

No way man, did you see some of those dyno's! I think that the speed soloing must have been combined from several different routes or something because there is no way that some of those moves were 5.7. How about the one where he throws it, and slips (!) and catches himself on the lower hold.

Jesus man, if it is a .7 it's the most badassed one i've ever seen.
