I call myself an under achieving over-expecter, and conversely an overachieving under-expecter, just depends on what im doing that day and how i feel. keeps me on my toes. i just enjoy the whole thing, and when i dont enjoy it, then its time to move on to other things to enjoy.

I have been climbing for two years. I climb both outside and inside. I am: A beginner to intermediate sport climber. I have my own quickdraws and can of mousse, but I only rent my spandex...I have the option to buy, though. Sweet. I am a pants-soiling non-trad climber. I am somewhat afraid of placing pro and flat out terrified of buying pro. I mean...it seems you have to spend like $174,029.83 on titanium nut-chock-pitons just to pull off the ground on a 5.7- safely, what's up with that? Then you need, like, two humvees to haul it all to the crag... I am an ice climbing wanna-be. I crave sharp tools and incredible danger, but my nose runs a lot in cold weather and I have yet to see an ice climber who doesn't start every story with "So, I almost died."...even stories about...birthday parties and kittens and whatnot. Sheesh. I am a top roping ninja, with skills that boggle the mind. I scamper cat-like from plastic hold to plastic hold, occasionally pausing to chalk up and sneer at the boulderers...because chances are they're sneering at me...because all boulderers have an attitude problem, as we know. Oh, yeah. I boulder a lot. On days when I'm neither fat or weak, I'm ok. So, now you know. Allez, Homard!

Several people have asked about the idiot designation, and several have offered their view of where it falls in the ranking, and several have even claimed to be idiots or to have passed through the idiot phase. So allow me to clarify: Idiot can indeed coexist with those other less useful categories. IF you know you are an idiot, you might just live through a situation that you otherwise might not. Is it possible to pass out of the idiot stage? Maybe, but it could be dangerous if you merely THINK you are no longer an idiot. It could be dangerous anyway. Always stay in touch with your inner idiot. A subtle point about idiocy is that failure to aknowledge your idiocy is closely related to climbing hubris. In other words, you think you are an expert, and certainly no idiot, you're really good in fact, so you do things that eventually wind up getting you hurt or killed. Often these are stupid things. Bear in mind that we have all done them, we probably just didn't realize how stupid these things were, got away with it, and think we are good because we were lucky.

Wow you joined in '69 and posted 11 times? That's a record ! :)
In reply to: What would you consider yourself in terms of climbing experience? Beginner Intermediate Advanced Expert I would probably consider myself intermediate because I can climb around 5.9's and been climbing about a year and a half. What about the rest of you?

I would consider myself intermediate i guess. I can climb 5.10 (i did an 11 once) and am pretty solid on 5.9s. _______________ I refuse to accept your reality, and substitute my own.

I consider myself intermediate, not by my climbing ability, but by my knowledge of safety, equipment, and style. I consider myself a once strong climber out of practice.

Before kids I was leading 11 sport and 10 trad. I guess that would rate as intermediate. Now I'm just a bumbling old fart.
