Description:

The west face of MStM looks imposing, but really it is a low-angled bowl of ledgy rock. Tracing the right edge of this bowl, however, and left of a vegetated ampitheter, is a sinuous rib of reddish stone. Begin just right of an grassy dihderal, up a nice flake. The climbing follows the center of the rib & is moderate, sometimes even blocky and dull, but there are moments of excellent exposure & fun. Pitch 3 includes a nervy finger crack thru an overlap (5.7). Reach the ridge below the North Summit in about six 200-foot pitches; then you face a desperate-looking, 70' splitter finger crack up a gendarme. Fear not -- the crack is easier than it appears, pro is perfect, and the granite & position are stellar. From a dip in this ridge, you can downclimb (low 5th class) into the rocky chute near the SW summit, or continue to the North Summits wacky summit block via easy but clean ridge-climbing.
