In reply to: Anybody from the Denver area want to dawn patrol on Tuesday if the conditions are good? John, It was dumping yesterday and you should be able to find some pretty decent if not great turns. Wish I could get out tomorrow. :?

So Wannabe, Splat, and myself decided to go get some turns on Sunday. It was raining in town, so why not give it a try? On the drive up to our "super secret" spot that get's lot's of early season snow, we were treated to some early season dumpage. The snow line was about 10k ft. Rain up until that point. When it started snowing, it was coming down. The parking area. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_004.jpg Getting ready out of the car. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_001.jpg We are nothing but serious about our boackcountry riding. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_002.jpg After a decent hike in we got ready to drop in. It was dumping the whole time. My gear got covered about as soon as I set up to take some pics. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_005.jpg Then Splat went for it. FIRST TURNS ON 05-06!!!! http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_006.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_007.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_008.jpg Wannabe got after it too. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_009.jpg After 400 sick vertical feet of sliding, we were pretty much wiped. Pack 'em up. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_011.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_012.jpg and get out. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Gulch10-9-05_014.jpg So over all it was the best turns of the season. We were striking some rocks on our rock boards, but that is why we have rock boards, so that we weren't worried about hitting rocks. I'll be there next weekend. Game on! 8^)

Well done, guys. Personally, I prefer a little less "base structure" on my skis, but I can see the advantages of such an aggressive stone grind and tune: - the open base structure holds wax well - grooved skis are more stable (jumping skis often have 4 grooves) - provides a more stable platform for the occasional kick turn - allows climbing of minor inclines without needing to strap on skins - reduces the need for extra beefy ski brakes - probably eliminates your buddy's ability to use the time-tested favorite excuse of, "I would have beat you down the run if I'd used the right wax for today" Powder on.

That's good snow in them thar hills! :D Yeah, that was some pretty good shiznit! how many laps did you end up doing before you had to bail? As far as the party goes, it looks like I headed out just as things were gettin good. I especially liked the ring of ladies bent over the tree in the front yard.

Sounds like I left the party a little early myself. Still I got some good evidence. 3 laps total and out on Saturday. Yesterday, well we drank a lot of beer, again...
