Got out to Farley yesterday with the "plugged-in Western Mass" guy and clipped some bolts. Actually PIWMG clipped bolts and I rode along. Hadn't been out in awhile and was feeling a bit timid at a new area and thus was content with TR. The menu ran the gamut of 5.9 to 5.10d.

Had a blast! Madame Buttery (5.10a) (sp?) was absolutely worth the price of admission. What an absolutely stellar climb. Everything we climbed was great!

Only drawback was my some of my clothing and gear got a bit singed as we cooked hotdogs for lunch by the heat of the volcano! Photos to be posted soon! I'm now in the market for a new lead line, any suggestions?

Met Ward and his friend Steve at the crag. I have interacted with/shared some top-ropes with Steve previously at the Rumney or maybe the Gunks in the past. I have seen Ward before at Rumney but never spoken with him directly before. Both are terrific guys.

Late in the day the two of them passed by us headed out. They were both carrying pry bars and had obviously be doing some trail work. Got me to thinking how much we owe to people like Ward and Steve and those like them for their efforts, many of which go beyond trail work, that benefit so many climbers.

Inspires me to make sure I spend some time on the Rumney and Gunks trail work crews next year. Thanks Ward, Steve and rest of you who quietly and tirelessly make things better for all of us.

Jake glad to hear you had a great day as well. Damn! If only you drank I would be making a pilgrimage to LW soon and probably regularly! Do any of the regulars dwon there enjoy a brew or a wee dram at the end of the day?

Josh glad to hear Tiff is on the mend! My best to her! Enjoy the school search thing and all the time you can get with your daughter. I don't know if you are aware of it, but daughters do end up running off and getting married of all things!!!!!

I have recently lost a daughter/climbing/ski buddy but gained a non-climbing/non-skiing son-in-law. I'm still attempting to see the silver lining in the exchange!!! I think it may be coming in the form of an additional grandchild/potential belayer-ski buddies!!!

Bill glad you had a good time at Farley, it really does suck out loud, doesn't it? I can't wait until the warm weather comes again to not go back there.

Todd, hope all is well with you and yours in NYS. Matt owes me a Gunks trip, no cracks there; or at least a run up something at Cannon, we got rained out last time. So get in line!

(Is there anything more disappointing and sad than standing in the PL at Cannon trying to delude yourself that the current deluge will quickly pass and that a horde of elves with battery-powered, electric hair dryers will go to work so you can climb Moby. We were reduced to sport at Rumney!!! At least Jake was there to keep it interesting!)

Epoch come down to the Gunks with Matt. We will have enough beers at the Otter the night before you will be hung over enough you won't miss the cracks at all!!!

Kym and son will be out of town weekend of Dec. 15. Gunks could be an option with a Friday night drive and a return on Sunday. Hmm...

I could do the 15th possibly.

YOU were out saturday??? I wasn't even out saturday ahha i went to RIRG and stayed nice and warm and kicked my ass to a sore pulp.

Peace dove was a good thing to get on when it was that cold.. the friction must have been sweet.

I might be buying a new bike frame soon.. and am thinking about unloading my trad gear since i never seem to go and it's usually with someone else with a rack so... if anyone is interested.. i have 1-13 ABC smiley nuts, yellow and green alien, pink red brown tri cam, WC tech friends 1.25, 1.75, 2, 2.5, 3.

Gabe,
Don't you come home with a booty tricam just about every time you climb?

Jake,
It's tempting to triple up on my aliens...but I'm not sure yet. If you're having trouble unloading them, let me know.

It's been hard to get out lately, busy schedules and less than ideal weather are keeping me away from the rock. Hopefully this winter will bring some chilly rock adventures...without axes.

At least Al I can look forward to some desert climbing in a week or two...We just have to decide: take the rack and check a bag on the plane or plan to clip bolts and take carry-ons only...

Oh the agony! Smile meh...check the bag!

Ha! I've given away a few of 'em, but they still keep piling up in the gear drawer. Hmm... all tricam ascent of Shockleys?

Seriously, though, it's the cams I'd be psyched to own. Splitter cracks and long aid routes...

C4C & Notch --- Clearly the Gunks are unfortunately not happening this weekend!!! The way it's going, Cold Weather Kevin and I might not even get out locally this weekend. Might get in a little skiing instead.

Hit Farley again last weekend. Pretty dang cold, even Kevin was affected by it. Compounded things by not eating properly. Need to be sure to properly stoke the furnace in cold weather.

Forgot what a beating your kidneys can take by repeatedly catching falls (Kevin weighs about 200) and then taking repeated falls yourself on a sport climb with limited rope out. Don't ask me why we were beating ourselves up on a wet 10c in 40 degree temperatures. Had fun nevertheless. Learned it pays to get there early, by 9 AM, since the sun comes off the main face by 1:30-2 PM. Once it does it gets cold fast.

Matt have fun on your "bachelor" weekend! Todd, the three of us definitely have to do the Gunks early season. --- Bill

"Bachelor" weekend indeed! Drove up to Sugarloaf Friday night with a coworker who owns a little A frame about 3 miles from the mountain. Drank beers, tuned skis and listened to one of the best classic rock stations I've heard in years (Freebird!) until about midnight. Woke up to 5 degrees and hit the mountain after a slow start. Early equipment issues slowed us down but things started to click after lunch and we skied powder bumps until we couldn't stand any more. A few beers at the Rack and we hit the road.

It's snowing at a pretty good clip here in Bath now, so I've got the skinny skis loaded up for a few hours of Nordic before I eat lunch. I'll hit the climbing gym this afternoon, come home, watch National Lampoon's Christmas vacation and be sound asleep on the couch by 8.

I'll be regretting all of this tomorrow.

the plan is Ultegra 9spd. My friend Mike who is also a climber and bike rider is going to help me build it since he has all the tools. The other pieces i'm still working on.. i have a stem but need to figure out what i will do about bars since my old bars are 26 and the stem is 31.8 clamp. wheels are still up in the air too but luckily it's not really a pressing concern since it's not exactly bike weather

Matt --- Bubblecuffer just seems to go on and on and on doesn't it. Particularly if you drop into it off that XXX bumper in the snowfield at the top, I have forgotten its name. Had the best week of skiing in my life in April at Sugarloaf about 5 years ago. Did you go down "Whip It"? That "trail" is a trip! The ultimate in fall line sking. Of course you don't have much choice, it's either that or the woods. Turn or tree trunk kersplat! Speaking of the woods did you take a break for the bumps and get in Cant Dog Glade?

I was not nearly so ambitious this weekend. A little Pats, a little shoveling, a little pulling the grandson around on a sled and a bit of day dreaming about Bonnie's Roof.

C4C any new TRs on you website? PM me the link, I'm too lazy to figure out where I filed it. ---- Bill

Indoors for me until the snow melts. God I love warm toes.

Still, my climbing partner (Jmeizis on RR.com) will still be contributing to the blog this winter. He's going to solo Pike's Peak sometime in the next week or so, and plans to do a lot of ice / mountaineering until my prayers get answered (that springs starts somewhere around... ... ...December 26th).

Glad you're all having fun otherwise...

Nice, Jake!

Bought a used snowboard and gear Friday night. Never had my own stuff before, always rented! Had planned to try it out in NH on Sunday. My own screwups added to the weather put a kibosh on that, so unlike the rest of Boston, I can't wait for the next storm so I can go play on *my* new toy!
