hehe... i predict in less than a day's time there will be a new thread authored by either devkrev or dudemanbu cleverly entitled "thunder, thunder, go away" except it will not be accompanied by a flock of smiling climbers... hate to say it so i'll just abbreviate it, I.T.Y.S... whatever, save up the energy for saturday!

Sitting in Starbucks, not having yet drunk my first cup of coffee, it took me no less than 3 minutes to ascertain what "I T Y S" stood for. After 2 weeks of this weather , I have come to the realization that posting about climbing is not as good, or anywhere close to climbing itself. At least the whitewater yakkers are having the time of their lives. dev

Do you mind if I tag along? I live in Philly and am in school so I don't get out as much as I should, but I can probably flail my way up 5.7, I have all my own gear, etc. Oh, and allow me to introduce myself, my name's Evan, nice to meet you all.

Crap.Stupid me without internet for days on end. I totally would have climbed with you guys had I know someone was up for it yesterday. Things fell through and I ended up bouldering with Idancewithclams and friends in the evening. So...my phone number is 203 206 5441. Call it if you are down for climbing ever, because I don't have internet at my apartment so whether or not I will get your message better that way. dev

so...Dudemanbu and myself checked out Chatfield Hollow. Its a fun little spot. There are a few good easy(5.5-5.6) leads, as well as some really steep stuff. We hit up a couple of the easier climbs, then flailed for a while on some steep 5.9 boulder problem type climb. We climbed some other stuff later on. The rock is Gniess and most of the routes are dead vertical or steeper. If you are solid on 5.11, there are a bevy of good leads for ya, but alas, we were not. It was inspiring to look up at Wallow in the Hollow(5.12 G) and dream. All and all, worth the trip. dev

Dudemanbu and Myself went to the Gunks today, we were gunning so well that the rain came to shut us down before we climbed every route at the place...or something. Started out on Kens Crack, then moved over to a link-up we have named "Shockleys from Nowhere". Seizing the opportunity of two 3-star classics being unoccupied at the same time, we jumped at the chance. I led up the first pitch of Strictly From Nowhere, pretty much setting an anchors worth of gear before committing to the crux (I figured the fixed pink tricam wasn't enough). I set an anchor at the bolts and quickly brought Dudeman up, he agreed that the fixed tricam wasn't enough gear for the crux, and pulled through like a champ. Feel free to go see this fixed tricam, it was there a year ago when I first climbed the route, and it ain't going anywhere. He then quickly struck out on the second fun traversey 5.easy pitch to the 2nd belay on Shockleys ceiling, where we quickly re-racked and he continued up one of the most well known roofs at the Gunks..... PSSSSS........Its the one Dick Williams climbed buck-ass naked in 1964. We got to the top, just it time to hear the thunder, and the drizzle began. The rain started when I was on the ground, and Chris was on the GT ledge, but anyway... Well, I got to lead an awesome 3 star roof at the gunks, and a top-rope ride up one of my favorite pitches ever, and Chris got to lead a 3 star pitch that also happens to be one of my favorite pitches ever. The rain continued, and we came home. We had a 12 star day, even though it ended abruptly. dev

Shockley's from nowhere was definitely a great climb, even if the middle traverse pitch was a bit "mungey". I enjoyed it very much.

Hey I was just trying to check out the area and actually see what the rock is like here. So I went over the Chatfield hollow. Is all of the climbing there just off of that "chimney trail" on that rock just inside the gate? I don't know how stable all the overhanging rock is but it looked like you could throw down a couple overhanging offwidths....fun fun

I dunno what rock you are talking about at Chatfield. The main wall there is past the gate and just off the main road. Alot of climbing in CT is pretty steep. Chatfield isn't the same as the "traprock crags" of central CT. Overhanging offwidths sound fun though. I wish it was nice when I didn't have to work and crappy when I did. Someone got the order mixed up. Work sux dev

Dev, myself, and a character called "mike D" went climbing at ragged on memorial day. We started out on owl's perch, which was a great sustained climb with wonderful moves. Dev lead it like a champ, and in my as of late style, i nearly peeled while cleaning gear. After this, I had to use the facilities. Thankfully I'm a boyscout and know to pack TP every where i go. It turns out that it was a very good thing that I evacuated my bowels, for the next climb happened to be of the "crap your pants" type. I decided to lead up bushy groove. A really high quality route. If the bushes weren't there, i'd give this sucker 3 stars. I pretty much dispatched it easily. I was running out of gear, so i decided i'd run the last bit out to have some options for the anchor. There's a small ledge near the top, with a deep finger crack where 2 moves will bring you over the edge. I had a number 2 max cam about 10 feet below this ledge. Peering into the crack i noticed what appeared to be a dead wolf spider. I used my nut tool to make sure it was dead. It was. I then commited to the topout, and as I jammed my fingers into the crack, the biggest wolf spider i've ever seen skitters out of the crack. I'm arachnaphobic. I screeched like a little girl, turned around, and lept off the ledge with all of my might. About 25 feet later, i was happily safe from the spider, and really glad that i had used the bathroom only minutes before. I resumed the climb and avoided the crack. This made for an interesting topout. Dev took off, and I lead right side of weissner slab and weissner crack with MIKE D! It was fun. I really enjoy weissner crack.. nice sustained, easy to protect, stemmy, jammy, everything. I highly recommend leading it to anyone that hasn't. Here's a picture of the bastard. The inches on the ruler is a typo. That's actually a tripple yardstick. As you can see, this sucker is nearly 7 feet long! http://outreach.missouri.edu/...ects/wolf_spider.jpg

Hi Guys, I'd be up for climbing this Sunday (the 18th) - the gunks or anywhere in ct. I can contribute a rope, but not much else. And I'm not really prepared to lead unless we're doing, oh I don't know, 5.5's.
