Cool

I've been wondering if that was THE jgill. Wouldn't that be an incredible thing if it was?

i second the cool story commentary.

on the note that this doesnt happen anymore... just this weekend (saturday) me and a buddy of mine went to a crag and there was this guy traversing. and we offered him a tour on our rope (even loaned him a harness). it does happen, you just need to meet the right pplWink

5 years ago, I had a brand new rope, beautiful, I was at the crag and I wanted to climb a route that was a bit more then my leading capacity. A random guy was there but his rope was set on another climb.
He wanted to climb, I wanted to climb, I let him inaugurate my rope (and leave a top-rope for me). I tough it was fair, and that I was doing that because I would benefit in the end, but for no reason I can understand he was very, very, very much amused with my "kindness"...

I don't believe so. There was a party before us already bailing by the time we got to the end of the first pitch. I had asked if they were going to start the second pitch and they said no. My friends were right before us and after us was a team of foreign girls who I talked to for a bit and were climbing the second pitch right after.

Actually dude, I am a Tibetian Buddhist. That being said, I was practicing an ancient american tradition of "Ball-Busting". You need to realize that America is the most culturally diverse place on the planet. We don't always get along, but we all realize that our country is better than yours or anyone else's. I only made the comment about your sister because when I called to bitch about my cable bill last week she sounded hot...Tongue

Dude, at this rate all you gotta do is keep up the good work for another month or two, tops. Once you've managed to mortally offend someone from every continent the Bush administration will have no choice but to appoint you to some random high-profile position at the UN!

I don't know what attracted so many silly-minded, no-common-sense "climbers" to the gunks two weekends ago, but I honestly spent more time watching them screw up than I did actually climbing.

So what did they do? Ok, the jackass with the rope should be culled, but what did the slow party do wrong except take longer than you, or I would to finish the climb? Getting stuck behind a slow party isn't funny-strange, or funny-ha-ha, and you never said they did anything dangerous. So they couldn't pull the roof on a Gunks 5.6, and their anchor was a CF, thats called trying and learning. Give the noobs a chance, see subject line, its supposed to be FUNNY.

You're right, it was so much a "HAHAHA" funny, but more a "I cant believe this happened...and again...and again" kind of funny...

It was one of those things. We gave them a chance and all the time they wanted and even tried to help but the guy insisted he knew what he was doing, had lots of experience and was just having an off day which I can totally sympathize with. The "funny" part was how it just kept happening, that's all. No offense intended. I've made plenty of silly mistakes up there too. I'm sure he'll get it next time.

Yeah, what a "stupid noob" to think that people mark routes outside...

I'd rather see tape in a gym than tick marks outside....the real idiots are the "experienced" climbers outside who need holds marked.

Scary n00b story.

Red River Gorge in April:

n00b - an "experienced" gym climber - leads a 12b to the 4th bolt. Can't go any more. my friend offers to put the route up for n00b if n00b will belay him.

Matt: Have you used a Gri-Gri before
n00b: yep

Matt TR's to the 4th and has a take. after a shake he says "climbing" but n00b is shortroping him in a bad way. Matt's wife and I both yell to n00b that he's climbing.

n00b then says: How the fuck do you work this thing??!!!

At that moment two things happen. n00b OPENS THE LEVER ON THE GRI-GRI TO FEED OUT SLACK. Matt falls.

fortunately the n00b RELEASED the lever, but it was too late - with rope stretch Matt decked from about 40 feet up, but not with as much force as it could have been. I am grateful to say that he landed in such a way that he did NOT break his ankles or cause any permant damage - he just couldn't sit down for about 3 weeks.

later i heard the n00b telling his friend: "he asked if i had used a gri-gri and i said yes, but what he meant was had i lead belayed with a gri-gri and i haven't done that before."

lessons learned the hard way!

Leading a route at your limit with an unknown belayer is a major mistake.

Giving a GriGri to a nOOb can be a fatal error.

Oh yeah,

I've dished one out at a gym. The funny thing is that my partner did a spreadeagle over the rope and his toes touched down on either side, allowing him to just miss getting rope burn. When I tried to lower him by moving closer to the wall, he naturally lowered too and the distance between him and the rope never changed. He was freaking out because he couldn't move away from the rope and my lowering wasn't helping him any. I was too stupid then to know what else to do. He has still sworn revenge. Thankfully, he lives far, far away.

My funny noob story.

Well, I don't call em noobs - there are tourons and flat heads, and then there are flathead climber wannabes.

Tourons are those people who wander around the base of the crags gawking at the climbers and asking such questions as "How do you get the rope up there?" and "Isn't that dangerous?". There is really nothing wrong with tourons. In fact, they can be quite pleasant to talk to and usually don't get too upset when you josh them and say you used a harpoon gun to place your rope :p

Flatheads are tourons who go scrambling around and get themselves stuck up where they had no business being. Most flat heads find their way down off the rock in one of three different ways. The first is they get darn lucky and don't hurt themselves. The second is they don't get darn lucky and DO hurt themselves (some fall on their heads .. thus flat heads). The third is they use up local tax dollars because the search and rescue is called out to haul their sorry arses down at 3am in the pouring rain.

Flathead climber wannabes are flatheads that go into a gear shop and purchase ropes and other gear and neglect competent instruction/mentorship then proceed out to the crag and do their usual flathead thing only with gear they don't know how to use.

About - oh what was it? 1988 I think. I was hiking around at Veedauwoo and meandered over by the Walt's Wall complex. There was this guy and his three girlfriends. He was leading Walt's Wall (some people call it Kim). He got to the first pitch and tied into the old cable that used to be there. None of the three girls he was with knew how to climb or belay. He had clipped girl #1 into the rope with a regular biner. Girl # 1 climbed up and he told her to unclip and toss the rope down to girl #2. Well, he had neglected to secure the other end of the rope to anything and girl #1 did as he instructed, yelling ROPE. The whole thing slithered down and landed at the feet of girls 2 and 3. They looked at it like it was a rattler, about to bite them.

Instead of standing at the base of the cliff, pointing and laughing, I decided to be a showoff. Hey, 22, going through a divorce and it was only 5.4 ...

I solo'd the 3rd class chimney around the corner (5.4 and 75 feet of exposure - I wasn't THAT stupid) and walked their rope back up to them. Set everything up for a rapel and left the guy with the advice to learn how to climb before he endangered anyone else. I then down climbed the aforementioned chimney and went on my merry way.

The moral of the story - when you combine a flathead climber wannabe with three tourons turned flatheads, you will inevitably end up with some news OP/ED spewing about how dangerous climbing is because these people managed to remove themselves from the gene pool.

God Bless,
mik
