Last saturday (1/12/08) a climber by the name of Sarah was hurt by apparent rock fall at East Peak in Meriden CT. Anyone know her? If so, how can I contact her?

Jimo and ADK, here's what I can tell you.'
On January 12, 2008, Sara G was struck on the head by a falling rock while belaying. She sustained multiple fractures of the skull. She was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital where she was stabilized, and then transferred to Brigham and Women's Hospital (in Boston).
Because of the severity of the accident, she is still under sedation, and has not yet regained consciousness, and of course, it's too soon for visitation, etc. All of us in the Boston Community are hoping she'll find a full and a speedy recovery.

Sara is making subtle improvements daily but is still under full sedation. The whole Boston community is praying for her recovery. We are getting speedy email updates from one of her close friends. Although sometimes the updates don't seem that positive, we are assured that they are.
Sara is one of the most positive people I know and she didn't deserve this. Sara and her family our on all of our minds.
Get well, Sara!

Firstly, here's hoping for a speedy recovery.
Secondly, I have to ask, was there a helmet involved?
Wear your helmets folks, even belaying. It's unfortunate that situations like these have to serve as reminders in that regard.

Since there is no mention of the climber falling, I assume that he/she got down safely after Sara was injured. Details?

The rock was a sizable block.
The fact that a grigri was being used is why both climer and Sarah are alive.

No, it was top-roping. The climber was about 50 ft up and there was a 200 ft long scree field behind the belayer (45 degree angle). When she was hit she immediately went unconcious and let go of the rope. If not for the grigri, climber would have fallen on top of her and they both would have gone down the scree slope.

By best to Sara and her family and friends. I was near an accident scene quite a few years ago when a similar accident happened and the gentleman was not wearing a helmet. Be sure to always wear those lids. Even with a large impact I'd like to think it would help. Any word on whether she was wearing a helmet? Please keep all of us here posted. We will all keep sending our positive energy her way.

as if wearing a helmet should make others more sympathetic to her pending condition. as a friend of sarah's and a climber of 17 years i still find that questions like this make me sick. we can be so heartless and judgemental at times. in your last traffic accident were you using a cell phone, eating, changing the radio station, or looking at that hot jogger on the sidewalk-who cares! sarah is rad and the fact that she was not wearing a helmet should not belittle the fact that she is hurt. my thoughts are with her, and i look forward to seeing her fully recover so i can tease her about climbing on north east choss.

I'm sincerely sorry that your friend got hurt and hopefuly a combination of modern medicin and a fighting spirit will see her through to a full recovery.
Its cool to vent a little in times like this, dont think I'm jumping on you for that or trying to start an argument. The issue of whether or not a helmet was being worn is truly relevant information, in that, this forum is dedicated to the reporting and analysis of climbing accidents. The hope and objective being that through close analysis people can understand what went wrong, what the contributing factors were and how things like this can be prevented.
Not all accidents are preventable, sometimes a rock just comes out of nowhere and the only thing that can help is having planned ahead. If one new climber bys a helmet (like this guy perhaps - http://www.rockclimbing.com/...;;page=unread#unread) or one climber reads this thread and is reminded just one time to put his/her helmet on when racking up in the parking lot, instead of after having been at the base of the cliff for 30 min., then this thread has done some good.
Helmets are important, dont underestimated their ability to save lives.

I was reluctant to answer the helmet question for this reason. I avoided it the first few times it came up. It does no good for us to try to find any "blame"
Please focus your thoughts/prayers/whatever toward people affected by this accident - especially Sara.
By all accounts (I only know others who were there that day), Sara is an incrediblely brave and inspiring person. I hope her all the best in her recovery.
