While sitting here pondering useless things, I just reallized that I don't know what is behind El Cap. All the pictures I see show it from the valley floor, or from the summit outwards, or from the wall itself, and I don't have a clue what the mountain looks like on the other side. Is it all rocky cliffs, or does the ground continue unbroken after the summit? I was wondering, cause I haven't heard of any regular trails to the top. Just an odd bit of curiosity.

Trees. It's not really a mountain, it's a cliff. You know how the Grand Canyon is surrounded by desert, well the valley is surrounded by forest which eventually becomes high country. On the east side behind El Cap anyway. And there are regular trails to the top, you can hike up the Yosemite Falls trail and turn left, 7 miles I think, or come in from hwy 120

Like many rock formations in Yosemite, El Capitan is a dome. The SE and SW faces were sheared off by glaciers. The road up to Tuolumne Meadows (140?) goes behind it, one way to get off the summit. Here's Ammon Elcapbuzz' photo from Higher Cathedral Spire: http://www.rockclimbing.com/...on=Show&PhotoID=7298

Don't let any of these jokers fool you. It's hollow, like the false front of an old western town. In fact, that's where they got the idea for Gunsmoke and Virginia City. The NPS has for years debated the merits of constructing a set of stairs ascending the inside of the face and occasionally drilling access tunnels to the outside. Strictly for rescue purposes, one official remarked. But our sources tell us the true intent behind the project is to charge $5 per person to use the stairs. Golden Eagle passport holders get a $1 discount. DMT

Dingus is right. In fact, I've heard that there's even a camouflaged viewing window, from which the producers of "The El Cap Show" can oversee the progress of the climbers ascending the faux-granite face. I heard there's a movie in the works, with Ed Harris playing the head Ranger.

You guys are hilarious!!!! Taking a rest day and hiking to the top of the cliff is a great way to spend a day. If you head right - you might see climbers on the tyrolean off of that Salethe pinnacle-Lost Arrow Spire, great short climb too, I'd hightly recommend the route with the tyrolean exit too. You can approach it from the top with a longer but flatter hike down the trail. Regards; Bill (Trolls and trains!!! I've been missing out!)

In reply to: In reply to: actually there is a train track running through the Captain. there is also a great restaurant that serves Merlot. Yeah! Isn't the restaurant called Hardings? No, Warren Harding (or someone who looks just like him) lives in a fiery cave reached through passages behind the Cyclops Eye on NA Wall. To the rare visitor, he might offer red wine. I think it was Royal Robbins who first discovered this secret.
