I personally think the reason most climbers instantly bond with other climbers is because we all put our lives in the hands of other climbers when we climb. And that most climbers would risk their own lives to come to the aid of a climber they don't even know, if they were in trouble. This builds a bond between climbers that compares to little else in our daily lives.

I think cops have the same type of trust within their fraternity, since they rely on their partners to watch their backs, and know that if the sh*t hits the fan, they'll come running.

I agree that climbers are super cool. I can honestly say that except for one well known climber. I 've only had good experiences.

WELL, just about anywhere you are going to climb there are going to be people there. And since climbing usually happens outdoors, I think it would be somewhat weird to pass someone in the middle of nowhere and not say a few words(at least). So I think climbers are used to being friendly to strangers, and we actually find that it's quite pleasant. (especially when they are nice back, you just made a friend!)

Adam hit the nail on the head! How many times have we heard of climbers giving up their summit attempt to stop and help a fellow climber in need? I don't hear too often in other sports where people give up the chance to win to help a fellow competitor. Most climbers ARE nice. Unfortunately, their are several climbers that I have come across that just thought they were God's gift to the rockclimbing world and were pretty stuck on themselves. Like the group of worthless punks I tried to strike up a conversation with at the Buttermilks recently.

I used to surf when I was younger, but I instantly switched to climbing as my main passion when i discoverd there was NONE of the 'tough local' attiude the surfers have. If you go to a new crag people are always willing to show you around, give you a belay ect.. but surfers just abuse you, drop in and generally don't make out of staters very welcome. I really think the 'partner' factor is the main reason we are all so nice.. we all have to get along with at least one person if we are going to climb anyting...

I was wondering if us climbers are nice because we have to be trusting people. Everytime we climb with a belayer or anyone else around you, your life could be in their hands. Is this the common link?

Dizzy.

PS. sorry for the repeat, i was too excited coz i had something to say.

Let's face it - how much of a real chuckle head are you likely to be when you climb? If you are, you either have no one to climb with, or a bunch of people who can't wait to climb with you ... for the sole purpose of dropping your bum from a great height...

Also, when your having fun, you generally like to pass that enjoyment on too others.

It is true that in general, all of the climbers i have met have been very nice, but if you just read some of the posts that certain people make, you will realize that there are still a few rotten apples.

"Kindred spirits" is what springs to mind and I've met some on the way, for sure, thats what makes cimbing so f**king great. (Excuse my French )

However, where EVER you go, whatever you do there's ALWAYS a few bad apples!

Besides, its nice to be NICE! It also creates positive energy within which is better for climbing, creates a better zone to climb in! When you get angry at people, or are mean within yourself then there's a lot of negative within, which doesn't work so well on the rock or with people. You GOTTA have lots of the positives to make it on the rock, in life and everything else!
Hope the above makes sense to y'all.

Yeah, thats why climbers are so cool. Well the positive ones that is!

Not all climbers are nice...
just all of us around here.

Me, especially.

But, seriously, if it is true, some of it might have to do with the amount of trust we have to place into others' hands. Kind of gives you a new respect for people.

I thought that most climbers were nice until I read through the post about music at the rock and was called a "Homo" and was told to "Grow Up". The only time I think that climbers are jerks is when they are disagreeing on the posts on this site. Other than that, I think that we are all nice because the Rock can't see color, rich, poor, good looking (like me), or ugly. It only respects determination, vigilance, and smart decisions. -Don Diego-

I'm not sure it's climbing that makes climbers nice. Look at it another way.

Basketball players are, in general, very tall. It is not playing basketball that makes them tall, it's being tall that makes them play basketball. Maybe climbing is just a sport that attracts nice people.

Of course, as in every generalization, there are always a few of the short guys.

LOL Geeeze I hope I am not "that one"!

Ya know untill I sat down and acually read this post I never thought about it, but I have never came across any climbers that were mean! I have came across ones that we didnt see eye-to-eye on SOME things.. but when it was time to climb.. kinda dissappeared LOL (mainly cause if I did climb with that person it was because there was no one else to climb with), and maybe that is why all climbers seem nice we all have the same "flow" in common hehe

Or its like everyone who doesnt climb tells me.. "your all nuts" haha, and since were all crazy we just don't notice it!!!

ORRRRR maybe all the mean climbers are all stuck on top of a mountain somewhere! because they are mean and their partner took off their harness and just left them there! (of corse you know that he would send up food on the rope, cause after all he is nice )

haha sorry I am a lil goofy right now

It really is because we have something in common. I also ride motorcycles, even if you don't ride, watch when 2 bikes pass in opposite directs, they both wave in some fashion. There are a few that aren't the norm. Same with climbing, I have found gear, some dropped. I saw some gear sitting in the same spot 3 weeks in a row. The problem is the few that stray from the norm give the rest a bad name.

Climbers are nice because everyone is out there doing what they love to do. People turn into A-holes when they are'nt happy with themselves and what they do.
Thats all I have to say at this time.

A biological theory is that if we're nice to the people around, then they may choose to befriend us if we get in a fix. I don't mean to be all cynical but it's like how travellers seem nicer.

In real life, last weekend, I was in Jtree and our rope got stuck while rapelling off a two-pitch route. A couple let me and my partner rap off their rope. Another guy lent his knife to cut the rope (less than a year old, ouch).

When we were all on the ground, the knife guy almost offered one of his ropes for us to use that weekend (but we had one in the car). And he was planning to leave the park. That is Really nice.

No lostangel you are not that one. Who "that one" is, is completely obvious to any around him for a fraction of a second. You don't live in the right part of the country to be "that one".

And on a lighter note, I love the responses recieved from this.

Plus, you know, we're all too busy climbing, or planning a climb, or daydreaming of climbing, or feeling the texture of a wall, or hanging off door frames to be mean And any one who can relate to this with the same passion is instantly Friend!
