About Stone Mountain State Park:
Stone Mountain has some of the best friction climbing anywhere - a 600 foot granite dome. Although there are some moderate routes, they can be intimidating due to the featureless nature of the rock and the exposure. A rebolting project in the late 90s by the Carolina Climbers Coalition and the state Park Service replaced all the original bolts and established solid rap stations on most routes. |

Directions: | (From Charlotte, NC) Take I-77N past Statesville to Exit 83 (US 21). Follow 21 north until you see a sign for the park and take a left onto Traphill Road (NC 1002). Follow this road for several miles until you come to the John P. Frank Parkway on the right which will take you into the park. Park gates open at 8 a.m.; closing time varies by season. Continue past the park office for a mile or two, passing the north face of the mountain on your left, until you come to a parking lot on the left. From the parking lot, take the trail following the signs to the Hutchinson Homestead. After passing the homestead, cross the large meadow on your left (the rock face will be very visible at this point) to the base of the climbs. Fill out a climber permit at the kiosk before climbing. |
