About Black Velvet Canyon:
|
Welcome to Black Velvet Canyon, home of some of the most outstanding routes in all of Red Rocks. From the relatively short Whiskey Peak to the soaring Black Velvet Wall, if you're looking for an outstanding multipitch climb, you've come to the right place.
Access: Black Velvet is one of the canyons located outside the loop road but not outside BLM jurisdiction. While this makes alpine starts available, be aware that there is no camping here and the Rangers will find and cite you should you choose to camp here. When to climb: This area is predominantly north facing, so it tends to make a good warm weather destination, although be wary in the summer, since even though the climb may be shady, the approach and descents will be scorching. Classics: Frogland, Refried Brains, Epinephrine, Sour Mash, Prince of Darkness, Triassic Sands, etc... Update: If looking for routes in the Mazatlan Area, please check the Whiskey Peak area, as all of these routes are located on Whiskey Peak. The Mazatlan Area was deleted, however your ascents were not deleted, just moved to the new area. Thank you.

| Directions: | This canyon is accessed via the Blue Diamond Highway (SR 160). While it is a dirt road, its fairly well traveled.
Set your trip to 0.0 at the junction of 160 and 159. Heading west on 160, make a right at 4.6 miles. Turn right and head north on the dirt road for 1.9 miles. The third left is your turn. Follow this, and make a right after about half a mile. Shortly after this you will come to the Black Velvet parking area. The trail is on the west side of the area, heading for the mouth of the canyon. |
