so... enough of the indecision. it's Feb and lets get this party started...(or start planning at least)
I'll throw myself on the grenade for this one.
Joshua Tree Gathering April 15th to the 17th.
That is from the majority of the people that have posted to the partners forum.
I'm in the process of trying to garner a keg of beer, and some "beer gear" from a couple different companies. We'll try and see about reserving a grope site in the Indian Cove, and I'll be there early as will a few others so we can try and get a few sites down at the Hidden Valley.
Keep your eyes peeled to here for any updates that may come along

As I said in the other thread - I'm definitely in!
I am looking to fly into Las Vegas, and drive to JTree. (Though I let my drivers license expire, and need to take the whole friggin' test over....so can't commit to being the driver until that's taken care of). But even so, if anyone else is looking to go out that way and wants to share expense on the car, send me a PM.
Also - I'd like to add a few days on, either before or after and climb Red Rocks. So, if anyone is interested in that.....

I went to the PA Gunks Gathering (http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=774616#774616) last fall, and they did the following, with regards to climbing partners, in order of what I think was the most popular choices:
A) People hooked up with others they knew already
B) People saw the names of others on the thread that they had gotten to know "internettedly" and made plans to climb together for a day
C) Volunteer(s) set up several toprope climbs for those for whom that would be the best option, and supervised the scene as a service commitment
D) The person who was organizing the event did informal hook-ups for those who needed partners.
E) Some leaders volunteered to climb with others who needed a partner
I don't know what other gatherings do, but quite a bit of effort was involved in coordinating the C, D and E above. Kudos to all those who put effort into that.
I am coming out alone(probably) and will be in need of partners too. I think things will start to set up as the date comes closer.
ALSO - I am going to go back to the other thread and start a list of those who have said they would like to attend, or tentatively may come). I'll try to keep it up to date as the dates come closer.

Looks like it's gonna be a busy time at Josh...there are 81 (well, now 79) campsites available at Black Rock area ONLY. No other reservable sites are available, group or family. So, I have booked 2 sites (the max you can reserve per call) each site can have 2 tents,2 cars and 6 people.
So, if you really want to go and be camping with your fellow RC.COMers, call (800) 365-2267 to reserve 1 or 2 sites at Black Rock Campground. They are $10 per nite, with a $13.65 cancellation fee if you cancel.
Of course, you can always try to get a site in Hidden Valley, Ryan, etc. But there's no guarantee any will be available.
I will have baja_java, crazymotos, oldskool, waller, and dameat spots reserved within my 12 person limit (just my friends, assuming they even want to go, don't know if they will, so I may have more spots.) With myself, that's 6 available for sure, so the first 6 other folks that pm me I'll promise a spot to (happiegrrrl and rendog will receive priority!)
Can't wait to see everyone there! Oh, and there are flush toilets and water available at Black Rock. It's sorta 'plush'...

I'm planning on heading out that way late March/early April -- what's the weather? Is that near the time everything's in bloom?
areuinclimber -- don't worry about finding a partner at J Tree. If there's an RC gathering there'll be plenty of folks. Even if there isn't, grab a site at HVCG, post a note on the bulletin board and you'll have people to climb with. I'll be solo as well, and it worked out great for me in November.

BTW: Not to rain on your parade, but, Black Rock is so far from anything resembling staying in Josh that you should take someone up on prepaying for sites in HVCG or Jumbo or anywhere else.

Well, there are sites available at IC. 26 when I checked...I just figured IC is a longer drive, even though there is some climbing there. Whatever everyone wants to do is fine with me, I can prolly switch my reservations over to IC...there was a group site available there the previous weekend, but it looks like these are the best dates for most.
So, Indian Cove? You can reserve the same size sites there, same price etc. at the same number I listed.
Anyway, we'll probably end up having sites in HV or Ryan or something...I just wanted to make sure we had some place to stay! Oh, and I reserved the Black Rock sites from the night of the 14th (Thurs) through the night of the 17th (Sun)...

If you can get sites in Indian Cove (or better yet, Sheeps Pass), jump on it. There are at least 600+ routes (many excellent) within walking distance of Indian Cove (including Rattlesnake Canyon). There are 0 routes within 20 miles of Black Rock.
Temps in April can be toasty, so Sheep Pass (higher elevation) might be a better bet than Indian Cove (if you have a choice).

Hi Gang! There are NO group sites available for these date. Not in any area of the park. But, I did not think to see if there are family (6 person) sites in other in-park reservable areas. I am going to call today and change my reservation (if I can) to either Indian Cove (not my first choice for mid-April) or, ideally, Jumbo Rocks or Sheeps Pass. I just can't remember if you can reserve sites there or if the guy I spoke to told me there weren't any available.
Anyway, when I find out, I'll post info!
FYI: There ARE group sites (2, I think?) for the previous weekend 8,9,10...
edited to say 'thanks fredbob!' I only chose Black Rock because more sites were available...the lack of climbing is unacceptable though...

i am definitely down... i am willing to get a campsite if need be and ill be bringing a friend and as much thirst quenching refreshments as i can fit in my rig (unless of course i end up sleeping in it, but that just means i'll have to drink half the beer first). so all i need is a concrete date, and location, which is probably still in the works i guess.

Well, at last check, there are also NO group sites available the weekend of the 8-10th either. Ugh. There are still 79 sites available at Black Rock, $10 per night. It's a place to sleep people. I doubt many of us will be hanging out at the camsite during daylight hours when we can be climbing...
Sites can get cancelled. You can check daily at http://reservations.nps.gov
If anyone can get a group site reservation anywhere, I am happy to help pay for it! Please PM me.
I am keeping the reservations I have on the two Black Rock sites 'just-in-case'. Although I plan to try to get a site at HV, Ryan or Sheeps Pass (if there is one to be had.) I plan to arrive the morning of Thursday the 14th.
Anyone else trying to arrive before Friday the 15th?

I am still a tentative "yes" along with duskerhu, we also may have a small group of Minnesotans from our local site but we've been kinda waiting for things to solidify here.
I have only stayed in HVCG and thats my prefered site but if we dont get there early enough i know it could be full, I think you are allowed 2 cars per site in HV so if we get a site there we can squeeze others into our site. we'll just stop by and visit you all at whatever campground you wind up at.
I should know in a few days if i can go, I'm not sure about duskerhu.

Well folks, I have good news and bad.
:( Bad: I probably (but not definitely) won't be able to make it.
:D Good: The reason I probably won't be able to make it is that my wife and I and a group o' friends just rented a house at the New. That's gonna eat up some cash on my end, I'm afraid.
I won't give up entirely, but after examining our budget, it's bleak. Maybe if I cut funding to family entitlement programs...

f_od, there are also first come, first serve sites available at Ryan, Sheeps Pass, Jumbo Rocks, Belle and White Tank. All are inside the main area of the park, and are listed east to west (White Tank being furthest from Hidden Valley.) I am optimistic that some of us will indeed, be able to get individual sites in one or more of these areas...as I said earlier, I too am going to attempt to get a site at HV or Ryan by arriving the morning of the 14th. We'll see...you might want to have a back-up plan too though, just in case!

there're bivvy spots just outside the park, viable backups closer than Black Rock. the BLM lakebed has plenty of space to "gather," but not all that scenic, well, unless you all are into the wide open expanse of pure nothingness, and drunken quad wheelers racing across the lakebed into the midnight hours
with Sheep Pass and Indian Cove group sites full, looks like some will probably camp at motels, some scattered at HV, Ryan, or Jumbo, and some more at those free spots outside the park. both APR weekends are non-holiday, so people can probably snag a site inside the park, at Jumbo at least. just that it won't feel like a gathering with people scattered all over. have never been to a gathering. pardon a noob gathering question, but you have to physically GATHER like at adjacent group sites to qualify as a gathering, right? :lol:

Alright, this is kind of a bummer for me. I would love to head down there, but April 15 is the last day of tax season (tax accountant) and hence, I have to be at work right up until the very end. I'll definitely need some time away from work then, and since I'm the center of the universe I think everyone should push their plans back a week to accomodate my schedule. 8^) Oh well. Just means it'll be less crowded when I do get down there. Have a good time everyone!

Someone had made a post the other day asking if we would actually be gathering at this gathering, but now I can't find it. Maybe I am just tired...if anyone else sees it, I don't know wtf is wrong with me....
Anyway, I did want to say something on that topic, because there will be a lot of planning to do; otherwise the weekend will just be a lot of rc'ers at Jtree that weekend, but not partying with each other(sort of like every other weekend, I would guess....).
So - we need to have ideas as to what people are interested in have happen.....
I don't have much experience with these type of events at all; only went to one so far, so I don't know what is the usual stuff.
At the Gunks Gathering, the majority of people arrived on Friday night and stayed in a couple of centralized places. One was the New Paltz hostel, which the event organizer had reserved the whole house in adavance for the event. Other people camped at the MUA(free camping area) and probably some people had other set ups.
It was just a casual, unorganized hanging out that first night, at the hostel.
Sarurday morning people headed off in all diferent directions to climb. That day, someone who had volunteered their time, took one group out to climb toprope. He set all the anchors, and did an initail check to see that everyone knew what they were doing. I'm sure if there were people who needed to be watched a little more closely, he'd have done that.
Others headed out in groups or pairs to climb on their own.
Saturday evening, there was a community dinner of pasta, salad, breads and dessert at the hostel. Then there was a slideshow at the local gear shop, and some of us went to that.
Sunday morning was a community breakfast, and then people headed out on their own to climb.
That event was organized pretty much by one person, and she really did a great job. On top of all the above mentioned stuff, she made sure nobody was left without people to climb with.
I think the things to think about for our event might be similar:
- Community meals, if any
- Hanging out and partying together on the Friday/Saturday evenings
- Figuring out a way to hook up climbing partners for those who won't have already gotten them.
Does anyone have any comments or suggestions they'd like to add to this?
Since fire_eyes has the only confirmed campsites so far, I would like to suggest that we tentatively consider those group sites the common area, at least until things start to settle into shape. I know Black Rock is not Hidden Valley Campground, and is not centrally located, but I think it is important that we do have some sort of spot where people sort of know that others will be there if they stop by.
I don't know if there are any climbing related activities held at Nomad's, but it might be fun to go to, if there was a slideshow being held on one of the nites. Another idea for entertainment is that those who play instruments and want to bring them along, could perform. Maybe you guys think that is weird; I don't know. In my group of friends(not climbers) we do this alot, because we have a lot of really talented musicans.
And also, for partners - If there are a number of people who toproping is best for, maybe we should see if we can get a few people to volunteer to manage it for one of the days. I know it is a huge amount of work, plus responsibility, but if there are people coming who haven't climbed much.....
I am willing to volunteer to assist in that. I can't do the anchor building(though I'm happy to set some up under the supervison and instruction of someone who is known to be competant), but I can run around for the people who do the anchors and handle whatever they need done; carrying gear, flaking ropes and crap like that.
I can also do belay duty at times, which would be a good thing, if there are people who well...you know. (I can provide references that I make a fair belay b*tch).
But, only for one of the days. On the other one....I need someone who wants to have me follow them up some not too hard climbs(5.8 tops). Will anybody want to climb with me....?

Super valid points all. Rendog and I have been talking about the non-availability of group sites and what a bummer that is. So here's what I've done:
RESERVED INDIAN COVE GROUP SITES #5 & #6 MAY 26-29 (Thurs-Sun)
This changes the dates for a gathering, but without a group site, we don't really have a gathering do we?
As for the other points, we can talk about organizing all of that. I can organize a group dinner in town (paid per person) for Friday and/or Saturday night. As for climbing partners, as we gather a RSVP list for attendees, I can get skill level/leading ability/have rack or don't info for each person and match up partners.
I'm also going to charge each attendee $1 per night for use of the group site (they each hold 20 people, and cost $20 per night). Site 5 can accomodate 12 cars, site 6 allows 7. So we have 19 cars in all, which means everyone must either have two people in their car, or be willing to park outside the park and ride to the site with someone else (This would be the latest respondees).
So, if you want to attend, you must PM me, I will give you an address to mail your couple of dollars to, and will send you a "ticket" which will reserve your space in the group site.
So there you go. We have new dates. Plenty of notice so it should work out (I hope) for all who wish to attend. These are the very first available group site dates (that aren't next week!)
I am starting a new thread today as well...

July is really HOT at Josh, and I have already reserved these dates. At least Indian Cove has some decent climbing...

I am going to JTree in April, with or without a gathering......The desert bloom is going to be amazing and shite - the last time I climbed outside was JTree in December. I am JONESING.
Please - to those who KNOW JTree and how things go.....what do you suggest regarding camping. What are viable options for groups, if you can spare the time to lay it out. I understand Hidden Valley and Ryan will be next to impossible to get a spot at....
I am perfectly willing to arrive on a Monday and stay through to the weekend. I'm just gonna need some climbing partners and people to hang out with. I'm a very gracious hostess; I'll even cook dinners.

Unless you really really really like loud drunks all night long. In which case the Hidden Valley Boulder Roll (hey! that space wasn't there a minute ago!) has achieved mythical status.
A pox on group sites! Anyways, no worries about Josh in April. I have climbed all day in May without suffering any permanent damage, so try not to get too bent out of shape.
Anyone who suggests going somewhere in Southern California that is not the Needles during high summer is clearly trolling. (I forgot that ''gnat'' existed until someone quoted him) However Josh is nice for the other half of the year, if sometimes a bit crowded.
Basically, quit worrying. Josh isn't going anywhere and neither is the BLM land. You'll meet plenty of people at Crossroads in the morning if you camp outside the park limits (I would venture a guess that the likelihood of bumping into climbers is very similar at 8AM in Crossroads to what it is at 9AM at Intersection Rock) and will probably have a fine time whether or not there is a ''gathering'' on that particular weekend.

I have been communicating with rendog via PM. It looks like
APRIL IS BETTER FOR MOST! So, since there are no group sites available, I have held my two sites at Black Rock (as a desperate, last resort) but as Tim says, we can plan to camp on BLM ground. There should be room for everyone there and we could stay together. It's not so scenic, and it is outside the park, but, so is Black Rock, and it's $10 a night. There are still sites available at Black Rock during these dates.
So, plan on April, BUT, if anyone does still want to go during the May dates, let me know. I'll hold my Indian Cove Group Sites one more week, just-in-case...

well it's still going to happen on the weekend of the 15th.
Fire_eyes still has two sites in Black, and I'll grab a couple sites for friday and sat night. I know it's a ways out from the actual climbing, but at least this way, we can hit the coffee shop in the am on the way up.
from everyone that i've talked to 99% are cool with staying at black.
I'm waiting on the beer response right now...hopefully I'll get one back in the next week or so. I'll keep you all posted

Black Rock campground isn't all that bad. Sure, it is removed from the main climbing areas a little ways, but so what? Lots of people actually stay in Yucca Valley when climbing at JT, or at least head into Edchadas restaurant for dinner after climbing--in which case it is easier to crash at Black Rock than it is to drive all the way back to HVCG or Indian Cove.

Fire_Eyes, Happie, quit stressing it - everyone will figure out a way to get there and stay there. I've never had a problem scoring a spot to sleep if I showed up early enough. BLM land is fine, too . . .
Generally the way I like it is we all rally back at the campfire, but you are going to be hard-pressed to have me go in this big mass of 20-30 people to go take over a rock or something; it's the anti-club spirit in me. THese big gathering things work themselves out.
Maybe I'll bring the Fury and she will for sure help with crowd control. :twisted:

Nope, things are a little messed up for Anne right now and my wife hasnt shown any interest in climbing for a couple of years now, its beginning to look like my climbing partner might not even be able to come out with me.

Last time i was there the cyotes (sp?) were snooping around out tent pretty good, i'd be afraid they'd "mark" their teritory if i was out under the stars. :twisted:

after a bunch of us drinking a keg or two of beer, I'd think it would be the coyotes who should be worried about getting peed on, not us

This gathering is going to be sooooo fun!
Oh, and speaking of coyotes, two weeks ago when I was there there was one on Quail Springs road acting hurt (he'd hop on three legs, then walk/run normally when he got spooked) begging for food from the cars that all stopped to get a good look at him. I got some pictures and managed to stop one tourist from feeding him...they're funny critters!
I leave at 2:00 today to spend the weekend there with 5 others. It's gonna be great! Hope you all have a great weekend,

well I'm going to get my sites as close to Darcy's as possible. with any luck, I should be able to get it right next door per se.

Yep. Ren and I have requested to have sites as close together as possible. It won't be much of a walk even if they end up not being adjacent. Besides, we'll have rope and rope bags, if you are too drunk to return on your own we'll just roll you onto the tarp and drag you back to your tent :lol:

ren (being the kind soul that he is) has reserved two more sites for the gathering. So, we now have room at Black Rock for 36 people, 12 cars. Please be sure to PM him or myself with your camping count, # of people, # of cars. Keep in mind you may have to park your car at an area outside the park if we fill up.

Another idea for safely getting people around the camping area would be to create a system of handlines from site to site. That 1st class stuff can get pretty tricky.

I am SO needing to get to Joshua Tree this year, and would love to come to this gathering, but because of all the other travelling I'm doing the logistics of camping won't work for me. If I attend I will probably fly into Ontario, rent a car and stay at a cheap hotel in Yucca Valley.
Seeing I'll be physically isolated from the groups, I'd be more comfortable if I could arrange a partner or two in advance. Please PM me if you might like to meet up with me. I will be able to climb a full day all three days.
Update 3/10/05 - Plans have changed - will be down there beginning of May instead. Safe and happy climbing to all of you...

I will fly into the States via Portland and will drive a van down if anyone along the way needs lift.
I will be climbing in the area (including Red Rocks, Taquitz, and the valley) after that weekend if there are any cats that are going to linger on.

You can camp with one of us, or perhaps can grab a site at another campground, but I believe the bulk of people will be staying at Black Rock.

I'm currently working in NY, and will be working in SC by that time, so probably gonna be a no show for me. :cry: However, this might end up being in the middle of the two jobs, and if so, I might be able to fly in for this one for a day or two, but not likely (1:5 chance).

Well barring any unforseen problems, I might plan on being there Thurs night through Saturday night (need to study on Sunday). Or if I am feeling really broke, I may work the day in Palm Springs on Friday and come up Friday night through Saturday night. But don't expect me to be leading at the level I have been the last time many of you saw me. I have started grad school and henceforth have become fairly light.
And T, there will be NO AB COMPETITION THIS YEAR!!! Not unless you have had like 4 kids since I last saw you. Say HI to Robert for me.

^ I know where the Gunsmoke Traverse is - It's by the Barker Dam area. Very cool place....There's also the boulder there with Streetcar Named Desire nearbye, and a cool, cool rock that is cutaway like a bandshell, and covered with pictographs from the native inhabitants of the area.
RE Bouldering...I think you will have no problem finding things to boulder....After all, isn't the place sort of known as being one big highball problem after another, that only mere mortals and wimps will rope up for!?(joking....sort of).
Just remember to pick up some balm for your mitts. That rock scours the skin right off!

I have a friend who is making the trip with me. Is it possible to add another tent in the group site?
The thing is, we will be coming in on Wednesday early evening and if we can, will snag a site at Hidden Valley or Ryan. If we get one, we'll probably just stay there for the duration and come to the group site during the evenings. But, we will definitely pay for the reservation in the group sites even if they go unused by us. I'll head into town once we are set up and post to the thread if the space in the group site will be available, and it can go out as a scholarship to some needy rc'er.
Do you want to have the site fee sent to you ahead of time? If so, send me a PM with your info, and I'll get it out to you right away.

well folks the time is getting nearer.
It doesn't look like I'll be able to get the beer sponsor to come through, but as I've promised there will be a keg of beer there. I'll pay for it out of my pocket and it'll be there friday night. What do you all think about donating afterwards for the cost? I jsut can't seem to think about having something like this go on and there not be a copious amount of beer there.

Ren, I don't even drink beer and I'll kick in! Happie, I have three sites, they can accomodate 3 tents each. I think I'm full on car allotment though, (2 per site, 6 in all...) but I know ren has 3 reserved too. So I think a tent will for sure be ok, the car may need to be parked in town overnight (I or someone, will drive them to park it and bring 'em back.)
Just fyi, if things stay the way they've been in the park, sites are gonna be HARD to come by...the past two weekends, EVERY (yep, all areas) site was full!! They had a full-on sign as you turn onto Park Blvd. stating all camping is full. Crazy.
But no worries, there's always the BLM lakebed, and a couple other secret sites...we'll all have a safe place to sleep.
Shall I try to arrange a group dinner for Saturday night? Shall we just do a campsite potluck? Thoughts? Anyone, anyone, Beuler...

Hey All,
I am new to this site but I would love to join the gathering. I'm coming from downtown San Diego so if people want to get in contact with me about rides and such feel free.
Climbing Vitals (for anyone curious about partners): I have never climbed in JTree. Been climbing for about 2 years. However I am just getting back into climbing and am right now roughly a 5.9c/d lead climber.

Thanks fire_eys, for the site info. Can you, or someone else, tell me the location of the BLM spots, in a way that we can locate them while driving? I've been to JTree only once, and the other person has never been, so we'd need sort of specific info. Though I am hoping that the Wed. arrival helps us get something in the park, I know my friend would rather stay on BLM land, at least for the nites where the group site isn't available to us.
As for beer - I'll chip in, though I won't imbibe. But - I AM intending to bring some kick-ass chocolate marshmallows. That way us nondrinkers can have our own toasts! Laugh now, ya buncha drunks....but these mallows are sublime.....I just hope the store restocks befor the trip. I got the last bag the other day and they're currently out.

Ditto. I'm a member of the CDA. with the emphisis on DIRTBAG. I've already paid for 3 group sites, I'm buying a keg of beer, happily i might add, since that's in the budget. Now that I"ve got to go and buy a new motor for my car (ouch) I'm not to have the luxury of eating out (unless she asks nicely)
I'm deffinately going to be BYOF on this trip. I'm thinking fajitahs at the campsite...(you can throw your sausages in if ya wanna skibby)

There is going to be a climber's movie night Sat. night the 16th at the JT Oasis ..... a screening of Vertical Frontier and also Wall Rats,... it's a benefit for the Friends of Joshua Tree, so you all should try to make it. Black Rock Campground is where we have 6 sites reserved...but likely that rc.comers will be scattered everywhere. Some mentioned hotel rooms, some BLM lakebed, some lucky bastard will probably get a spot in HV...

Gatherings are different for everyone. I'm much more a 'eat at the campsite girl' (tho I've not quite reached true 'dirtbag' status!) I will make homemade lasagne or some other such delicious dish for campsite eating Saturday, and you'll find me there.
There will clearly also be a group going to Edchadas (I forgot to stop there this weekend...sorry!)
And possibly a group going to the movie for Friends of Josh.

hey all,
i'm going to try to be there. hardly anybody here knows me, but i do hold the distinction of the only person to have climbed with both coldclimb and dr_kodos (!) and they both seem to still like me alright, so i guess i can get along with anybody.
i'd be glad to chip in if there's still bivy space available in black rock, otherwise i'll be looking for free camping.

Ok. The cat's out of the bag. I was planning on making name tags for every attendee, as well as an equally stupid iron-on for a t-shirt with your user name that you can have as a memento. I was going to include the rc.com logo, but alas, they said no way.
So, I'll be bringing an iron! :D
And fo_d, YES! Night climbing for me. Bouldering, well, not if I can rope gun some 6s...hehehe!!!

Since I'm local, I have the luxury of remaining non-commital until I see the weather forecast; but, in all likelihood, I'll be out on Friday night and Saturday, and then climb at New Jack City on Sunday. NJC is only about an hour's drive from Josh, so if anyone is interested in making a side trip to bolt-heaven, let me know.

Hi folks, I'm new to the site and to climbing in general (climbing only two months- climb 5-10c/d and boulder V2/V3 indoors but have not climbed outside yet). That's why you can't send out just one mass email. You'll need to do probably 6 or 7 to accommodate the size of the group.

That eliminates the need for the mass PM (for me anyway.) I guess we'll just have to see if the tentatives show...

Well....I was just thinking that we could switch out each other's name tags and get everyone all confused ("Wow," sez so-and-so. "You're not at all the way I imagined you would be from your posts"....
Truthfully, I don't think people would wear name tags. But if the graphic you designed for the iron-ons was cool, people would probably like it. Even if they only put it ona shirt the wear alone, on those lonely nights when they're stuck at home feeling sorry for themselves....
Or a sticker they could put on their helmets, or Nalgene's or something. Alas, it is not to be.....

Well...ive already been to Jtree 6 times in 2005, and thats pretty good since i live 5.5 hours away. So...naturally I would love to come to this crazy event BUT i already had prior plans to be in Death Valley that week so I cant come.

There is a shoe demo on the 10th at nomad adventures. The park is going to be packed that day. I think HV will be super jammed that weekend...I just got back from two nights of camping with my son (a Sunday and a Monday) and only because I arrived at 11:30 Sunday morning and was there when someone was leaving, did I get a spot. The place is jammed this time of year. But you never know...you may have the same luck.
We have reserved sites at Black Rock, my three are pretty much full, rendog may have room in one of his three. Maybe PM him as a back-up, or, I can give directions to the BLM lakebed if you can't get a site at HV.

Um, tigerbythetail, geez dood, maybe you should take up soloing...sounds like you're not much of a people person...who the hell belays for you?! :twisted:

Ummmm, fire_eyes.....good thing you also mentioned it's a black Rav4L w/ Cali plates.... Every damned car in Joshua Tree has climbing type stickers on them!
We are arriving Wednesday evening, and I'll post up the campsite we are at when we go into town for supplies. However, I don't think we are planning to go back to town each night, and I am sure there are more than a few who won't have access to rc.com between Thursday and their arrival. Yes, i know we can stop in at beatnik and go online.....
Anyway - also consider the possibility of extenuating circumstances making communication through this thread infeasible. (think....server problems such as took the thing down a few months ago.....)
No doubt you might be driving through Hidden Valley to find some climbing.....why not post the information on the community bulletin board there, too?
Plus - were you able to check in Black Rock campground has a bulletin board?
I am SO looking forward to this trip!!!!!
Ah - One other question - My friend is wanting to decide which ropes to bring. We're bringing at least one 60m rope, but he wants to know about doubles. Anyone who knows the place - worth bringing them (travelling on plane).

Hey Terrie: Leave the doubles at home...though there are plenty of wandering routes at Josh for which they may be good, the rock is sharp, and they'll take a beating.

When I last posted I didn't realize that an engagement party I'm going to is this Saturday. I'll probably drive up after the party and go to dinner with the group and schmooze at the campsites. Is Saturday night dinner at Edchadas still on?
Sunday, plans are for me, Hillary and her boyfriend, Alex, to head over to New Jack City, so if anyone is interested in making a side trip to check out some fun sport climbing about an hour's drive away, let me know.

Count me in. Can't wait to see Hanger and T again--it's been over a year. I may have one noob and one semi-noob joining me. Coming in Sat a.m., spending sat nite, leave sun evening. We would love to stay at Black Rock if there is room (just tried to book my own site but sold out), but I also booked a room at Super 8 as a backup. We'd also like to join for dinner on Sat at Edchada's. If kegs of beer are a possibility Sat nite I'm willing to do whatever is necessary to make it happen!

yep, wind is no suprise for JT
Hanger had to anchor me as he helped me over Moose Dog Tower
"life's a bitch.." or one over there. The wind there that day was 60 mph.
all of 115 lb me flapped in that wind.
Couldn't hear any calls/commands.

Yes, the last few days have been awfull windy at Josh. Yes, it's windy there a lot...the wind made it feel pretty chilly. Without it, it would have felt like summer.
ren and ski are already there!! I wish I had seen you guys this weekend, I was on Atlantis Wall/Lloyd's Rock all day Saturday, HV offwidth classics day on Sunday. FYI, I saw the Aquille de Joshua Tree on Saturday for the first time...if anyone has an itch to see it, I can take you there.
Nomad will have a posted sign about site numbers and the gathering. There will also be one at HV board and as you roll into Black Rock (my lazy butt still hasn't been there....don't know if there's a board, but I'll find somewhere to post-it near the entrance if not.)

There should be enough room for everyone at Black Rock, I think. Just come there and we'll work it out. If there isn't, I have plenty of camping options for overflow, and we can get that together as necessary.

Alright, first off, I'm very disappointed about not having a keg. As I've said, I'm perfectly willing to chip in on a keg. I guess I can always buy a bunch of beer, but a keg is much more fun.
On a lighter note; my friend isn't going to be able to make it. It will just be me, and I'll be in to do a little climbing on Friday with Pheenixx. I don't have a cell anymore, so this will have to be coordinated well, but I will be driving my festive looking green truck with a red topper. Hard to miss.

Yeah...too bad for no keg. I don't even drink and I'm happy to chip in. How much is a keg these daze, anyways?
I don't care what time the dinner reservations are for....just post it up and I'll be there.
But - I have 2 questions
1) Does anyone know the driving directions for that 3-hour route through the Mojave, from Las Vegas to JTree? I am looking on the stupid web sites, and all I find is routes that take 4 hours. I know there is a 3 hour one, because we drove it back in December.....I tried to find out, but the person never got back to me. I know that the Kelso station is pretty much the only sign of any human activity, save for the bleach fields(or whatever those are....)
2) On Sunday night, we are heading back to Las Vegas, and staying in a hotel, I suppose.....glitter, glamour and crassness galore! We want to be on the strip - any suggestions on which ones to stay at? Money is an issue, and I hope it is true that hotels in Vegas aren't expensive.....any idea what they cost? We want one of those disgusting theme-type glitz palaces I guess....definitly not wanting a Motel 6 type of experience.....In a small town I have no issue, but Las Vegas...um, no.

Enchalada's = would LOVE to join everybody but 7pm is a bit late for me too -- I booked ticket to support FOJT (friends of J-Tree) movie nite which starts at 7. So if ya'll can get started earlier -- add +1.
Keg = count me in for $$. I hope rendog can still Do IT..???
Weather = cold Low pressure moving out Tues, Wed. Was very windy in AZ all weekend too and now is starting to subside. Good luck w/ weather skibb & ren..!! :lol:

Hey all. I am kinda new at RC.com. I was pretty active on here about 2 years ago and may have chatted with a few of you. I was out in Wyoming. Well I just moved out to CA and would love to check out JTree. All my gear still remains in Wyoming so I may not be climbing unless I can get my hands on some gear. I have not climbed in a year or so so I may just belay this weekend.
So anyways. If anyone has any space anywhere please let me know. It will just be me and my truck and lots of beer. I know its short notice but if anyone could help out that would be great.

I would love a space there I have no tent or anything just my dodge durango which I will be staying in or camping on BLM would be awesome if anyone is camping out there.
3. There is no keg?
I am bringing a good amount of beverages to share but would love to put money on the keg as well.

Just bring yourself and your personal gear, you'll be able to climb untill your hands are a bloody pulp :twisted: it sounds like there are plenty of alternative camping options if things get crowded at black rock.

Oh, yeah....I keep forgetting that little detail. But actually, the reason I thought 8 would be good was because my partner seems to have a thing for gearing up for a climb just as the sun starts yawning and stretching, and getting ready to snuggle into the horizon for bedtime......

so what would be best here, cruise out friday night or early saturday morning? I'd imagine I'll be sleeping in my jeep which is cool, I'll just have to live with my dog farting all night and being stuck with the fumes, but this sounds like a good time. figure either way I can climb around, drink and hopefully meet some people.

wait...nevermind. used my work time to get all caught up and figure this out, if anyone cares, I'm coming Sunday night/Saturday AM, way early, I'd say 6-7am latest to catch people before they head out. I noticed alot of comments regarding a keg, people still want a keg? I know I can't buy friends but I can sure get them drunk enough to like me a lil bit I think. (I get discounted kegs down here, it's just going to be a chore trying to keep it cold through the day up until saturday night...but, I can still bring one if need be.

With this crowd, a keg of beer WILL buy you friends! rendog no can do on his budget, so if you can garner one, bring in on! Many people will gladly contribute $$. Even me, and I don't drink (beer that is!) I will find a place to keep it cold all day (the folks at Crossroads are good people...I'll bet money they'll cool it for us if they have space!)
Try to hit us up at Black Rock. Most people don't go out to actually climb til between 8:30 and 9:00am is my experience. it's just too cold before that. And what with nursing hangovers and all...
SO BRING THAT KEG! Ask around for fire_eyes/Darcy and I'll make it my job to keep the sucker cold.

k here's the deal, I'm coming (90% sure)
A partner would be great but we'll work on that later, I boulder but would love to top rope with someone who knows how to setup anchors, I have no formal training in that area, just belaying.
Regarding the keg (ie silver canister of liquid shananigans)
We have some options here; I'll leave it up to the community to decide:
Amstel light, Bass, Bud, Bud light, Coors, Coors light, Dos Equis (blah), Guinness, Harp, Heineken, Humbolt Red (not that humboldt red!), Miller something or other, newcastle, sierra nevada (anything from that brewer, pale, porter, etc), some random hefeweizen...sorry, those are all options, take it or leave it.
I have to tell my buddy tomorrow though what to get, so lets be snappy...
Any ideas on how to keep it cold on the 3hour+ drive?

I dont think you need to worry about a partner, if this is like any of the other gatherings i've been to, you'll have many top ropes to choose from, if not, i'm partnerless and you can climb with me.
About the beer.... youve given me too many choices but seeoing as how this is in a keg, i would vote for the Guinness, I'll contribute to the keg fund.

I vote for sunshine wheat. i love guiness but not the most appealing thing after being out in the sun all day.
I am just going to show up at black rocks and hope there is spce for me to park my suv. if not i will head out to BLM land.
I got my gear being sent out from wyoming and should be here by this weekend so i am good to go there. And I take it it should be no problem to find people to climb with.
I am bringing a couple of cases of beer and i can make one of those guiness if the keg can be something else.
sorry about the spelling I have a niece in one arm and a nephew in the other.
Anyways I will see you all friday night.

I'm not so certain that Guiness is suited for the situation either. I'd go with Newcastle or Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Hell, I'll drink whatever is there excluding Heineken. I hate that stuff for some strange reason.

Well, pull on that moutain hardwear fleece and crank up the a/c! (that's a joke...gas is WAY too expensive for that!) but maybe a blanket wrapped around it will hold the cold in a bit?

Just toss it in the car and we'll get it cold out here. Post up when you decide what to bring eh? It's sounding like folks like the newcastle (sunshine wheat?) idea. Not being a beer drinker myself, I have no vote...
And I personally promise you will get to top rope some climbs, and potentially follow and pull gear for some of us. I can set up top rope for you, and would be glad to. Just be sure to remind me if you need me to do that, I'll be running in 14 different directions no doubt...

k, as long as there is a resounding no, newcastle leads the pack right now.
As far as dimensions of a keg, college was less than a year ago so...I'd say about 2ft by about 1.5ft. weight, roughly 145lbs i think
What i might do is grab a trashcan, put it in that and pack ice around it, I want this thing COLD!

I still can't believe a keg is that heavy, especially since I've carried so many by myself before.
Trach cans always work great. I remember driving out to a lake in the Black Hills once with two plastic garbage cans sitting upright in the back seat with a keg in each. I had a real problem driving since I didn't want to look away from the rearview.

Well one of my "eye candy" friends and I may show up. She is taken though boys. The possibility exists for some Saturday night dinner appearance but most likely it will be a Sunday morning appearance. Where will all of the old school dirtbags be meeting Sun morning? I don't really want to hang out in Intersection Rock Visitor's Center too long, but it would be cool to meet some people I have talked to for like 2-3 years but never met.
Anyone that I know that wants to meet up give me a call as the weekend approaches.
And no sandbagging this year!! The only rock climbing I have done in the last 6 months was Lunar X, and two days at Josh. Still managing to get up 10a's though. Note, I said "managing".

K, the newcastle is coming in today actually, they are putting one on hold for me for Friday night. The trick now will be keeping it cold through Friday night, into Saturday...anyone have a HUGE freezer in Southern California? But we're good to go basically, I just have to keep my roommates away from it Friday night...guess I'll be on guard duty that night.

Question here regarding the actual climbing area people will be at/around: I understand most people are going to be at Black rock campground, how far into the park is that? What are the climbing areas like around there? I've been to Josh a few times but have only ever bouldered close to the west entrance.
I'll be arriving in a black grand cherokee, no plates, montrail sticker on the left side, big sloshing keg in the back...keep an eye out around 830/9am I'd imagine.

The keg rental place might give you a rubbermaid trashcan to keep the keg in, and we can just ice it down. Ice will stay cold for days in a cooler.

Black Rock campground does not connect to the rest of JTNP by internal roads. It is accessed from highway 62 from the town of Yucca Valley, by driving south on Palomar--I think.
To get to most of the climbing, it is necessary to drive back into Y.V. and to then proceed east to the normally used Joshua Tree entrance to the park.

At least 200 established problems, with most being one canyon over from where the sport climbs are, and I haven't actually visited that canyon. If you are interested, I can try to hook you up with some of the local boulderers.

I figure it should only take between 6-7 hours. Not too bad. I'll try to meet you at the campground. What time do you plan on heading out to climb?
hmm... that all depends on what time I can roust climbing partner out of tent. Me = sun up; coffee, bathroom, then off to crossroads for breakfast. Going to Headstone Rock @ Ryan for a.m. warmup then over to RealHVCG for few classics before weekend crowds. Sail-away, Loose lady etc...check there. I will leave a note on my truck (wht toyota tacoma w/cmpr-shell, turq/dk blue side stripes) should be there after noon. Hope to see ya soon..!

K, I'm getting there saturday morning hopefully around 8/830, is there a good place to get breakfast around town/should I keep an eye out for anyone else having breakfast around that time as well? I'm going to want to get on the rock asap after breakfast so it would be awesome to run into some people early.

T- 8?? I'm on the "don't get moving in J Tree 'til 10" schedule, probably because of all the old men who I hang out with (oh wait, never mind . . . it's me).
First plan of action for me will be scoring a site tomorrow. hopefully I'll figure out where you're at. I'm bringing the mutt with me and he magic "makes her behave collar" so I'll be fairly easy to sight.

We scored a great spot in Hidden Valley Campground. I am pretty sure the site # is 23, but,,,,,,,we have 2 blue/whte ents, and a gold Kia 4-door rental with Nevada plaes. If ya stop by early in the am, we'll probably still be in.
We'll pop over to the Black Rock group site Friday nite!

Well, I'm out. I stayed up late last night studying and trying to climb and trying to get a story done, and editing another, got up at 6 today, found I had no food, said "screw it" and went to work. I didn't get to eat until 5:30 tonight and on the way up to my 6:00 class I passed out, so I went to the lounge to lie down. Woke up with my prof standing over me a little worried.
I didn't want to commit to the thing because I knew I'd be harried this quarter and my body just said "No" to trip. Sorry guys.

Woohoo! My girlfriend has two days off and is making the long drive from LA solo to check out JTree for her first time! She is meeting us at Edchada's on Saturday at 7pm.
She doesn't climb much though, so don't hold it against her :lol:

Then fly to Denver...then to Portland...hand there for three hours...then to san diego...

Sorry for not posting yesterday...here are three of the six site numbers:
44, 52, 54
Ren's site numbers will be on the board at the ranger station (they post reservations on the bulletin board, look for the name Darran Chasson) since his reservations start tonight.
Ren and Skibs are in Ryan Campground (main park) at site 9 or 10.
Tonight, we should meet at their site to have dinner. There just aren't enough site sin the main park to camp though. Black Rock will pretty much just be for sleeping...
Unless of course, the keg shows! Then everyone will flock there...

Edchada's -- Yucca Valley -- on the main highway, in a strip center on the south side of the street, toward the west end of town. Dinner, 7 pm Saturday night.

WHATTA MEAN "unless" THE KEG SHOWS!?!
The only thing keeping it from showing is A) if it has gotten stolen from my apartment since I came to work. B) If I can't find anyone at Black Rock.
Since I'm plaaning on being at the coffee shop around 830 tomorrow morning I hope I run into someone there, if not, I'll head over to Black Rock and see if people are there. I'll probably use the site numbers just posted above to track people down so if you someone rolling a keg through your camp, stop me.
If anyone is overly concerned with the locale of the keg, PM me and I'll give you my cell number.

I don't think Edchada's is great or anything, it's your standard Mexican joint, but it's in Morongoloid Valley, so the standards probly aren't very high to begin with...

I don't think Edchada's is great or anything, it's your standard Mexican joint, but it's in Morongoloid Valley, so the standards probly aren't very high to begin with...
Their margaritas are right up there. And after you finish one of their jumbos you don't care much about any drawbacks the place might have.
Also, it's one of the few restaurants around that can handle a group of 15 sweaty, dirty climbers.

Tape gloves? I thought this was rock climbing in the spring in Josh. I don't recall wearing gloves when rock climbing, only ice.

Well, I can say for myself that this weekend was awesome. You guys and girls were and are amazing. It's nice to be around people as passionate about something as I am. Plus, I got to get on a rope for the first time outside and I don't think I flailed around too bad.
Thanks for everyone's noble efforts on the keg too.
I'm always looking to get outside so if any of you are you getting out, or if there will be another gathering anywhere else, please feel free to PM me and let me know and I'll see what I can do.

The next gathering!, That's what I'm talking about! This trip was such a success for myself for a number of reasons so I have great hopes for the next one. As long as I can talk myself out of work for a day or two, make a long weekend out of it perhaps, I'm down for pretty much anything as long as someone will let me clean, cause I'm no where near leading yet.
However, if I have to fly somewhere, I'm not sure that I can check a keg...or the dog for that matter.
But lets get some ideas for the next one!

Hey all.
It was great meeting those of you I had a chance to meet Friday night. Unfortunately I came down with a stomach bug at about 4:30 that morning and high tailed it back to my house. I can't think of much worse then being stuck in the middle of no where being sick. I tried to suck it up and make it back up there but I just couldn't make it. Sounds like I missed an awesome time.
Well I am moving back to Wyoming in the next couple of months. If anyone who hasn't climbed in Wyoming (ie Lander -- Sinks canyon and Wild Iris or in Laramie -- Vedauwoo) I would be more than happy to be a guide and possibly could even find some free bivys in both places. I know quite a few people here and there. I know in Lander that you can camp for free right in there city park.
I am planning a trip to Lander within the next two months. If anyone is interested send me a message.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I missed that! Congratulations to you both!! If you couldn't tell, I was exhausted...

Yeah, that was a great weekend!
HIGHLIGHTS:
-Seeing Robert and Nikegirl for the first time in ages. Robert asked what I missed most about climbing with him; I told him it was his farts but it is actually the way he cracks me up, and he didn't disappoint. The one about being unable to fold the viagra chair back up (you had to be there) was worth the trip alone.
-Meeting Steve, Curt and Curt from Alabama, John, Monica, Darci, Nolagkc and Alex and Chase, Josh, G, Phugganut, and remeeting/seeing Jay, David, and Addiroids. My apologies to whomever I left out, but Alzheimer's came on early--I think around my 2nd birthday.
-The birth of a prodigy--nolagkc. Keep your eyes on this guy--I'm anticipating great things. And he's a great guy. AND HE BROUGHT A KEG OF NEWCASTLE. Wow.
-Seeing Robert get engaged to a woman he is crazy about and is obviously crazy about him.
-kegger in the desert. Brought back fond memories of wasted youth (I grew up in yucca valley and palm springs)
-watching a gentleman of a certain age tooling through the parking lot getting a lot of apparently crucial driving beta from his seatmate, only to find out it was the GREAT FRED BECKY.
-the climbing
-the weather
LOWLIGHTS:
-waking up Sunday morning. Ouch. (see "kegger in the desert" under Highlights)
-Robert announcing to me that I was the ropegun for our group of climbers. I told him it was a sad climbing party that has me as ropegun. But I was wrong--it was an awesome climbing party (see "climbing" under Highlights
Can't wait until the next one! Thanks to everyone who put it together.

It was nice finally meeting so many of you. It was a great time and I enjoyed your company. I had never met anyone online before and must admit that it was quite painless.
Thanks to fire_eyes & rendog and everyone else who contributed, especially nolagkc for bringing that keg. Now I'm looking forward to the next one.

Has a trip report thread been started or should i post here?
Anyway, I had a great time, it was good to meet new people and hook up with old friends. I'll post more later when i get settled in better but I have to give a Huge "Thank you" to rendog and skibabeage. I came out without a partner and stumbled (thanks to jtme and fire-eyes) across these two free spirits dirt-bagging in Ryan, they took me in, fed me, made me laugh till i couldnt breath and wore me out on some great J-tree .....moderates?
ren and scabage, I look forward to doing some more of those 3rd class scrambles with with you again someday.
Anyway, sorry I didnt hang out with more of you at Black rock, staying in Ryan right in the middle of everything was just too good to give up, it would have been cool if we could have taken over that whole half of the campground.

Hey there Mike! It was funny meeting you and Monica in the parking lot at Lost Horse, then only finding out at Thin Wall later in the day that you guys were also rc.com posters.
I had a great time and I'm sorry I didn't get to spend more time with and/or meet more of the group. I was a little shy so didn't introduce myself early on. I'm glad I made it out to the Black Rock camp site though... those chocolate marshmallows were yummy! The keg and conversation were also appreciated :)
Thanks again to fire_eyes & rendog, you guys really pulled this one off :)

Yes, this was an absolutly great trip.
I had intention.
I was to propose to hangerlessbolt.
I'd been planning with rendog and marshall84 for a good couple of months.
I was determined to get Robert down there...
we'd not climbed in 3 mos.
got our "happy" weight on, for the time we had been inactive.
I was glad to see familiar faces going to this gathering f_od,climbs4fun, artm, ffaallliinng,addroids,marshall84, and jt512, as well as get to finally put a face to the cyber voices.
I planned it for our dinner to edchadas.
as nervous as I was, and fumbled thru the start of dinner...
steve(marshall84)said he had an anouncement...got everyones attention, and I slipped my chair out from under me...
said...I don't know what...and got to my knee.
opened my little trinket box....and asked Robert to marry me.
He said yes.!!!!!
giggle.
I am blessed...as I have stated many of times...in this rc.com life...
this is proof.

Funny to read this....I completly forgot that was said until you just posted.

I have some photos of myself, Curt(dirtineye) and Kirra(Pheenix) that I will put up in with my profile photos in the next couple of days, but I also wanted to show you guys some of the nature photos Curt and I took while we were out and about. These photos were all taken within Joshua Tree, or in the Mojave, on the roads between JTree and Las Vegas.
Part of the reason we came out was to see the beautiful desert in springtime, and we were not disappointed! Even so, it was really nice to meet so many of you guys. Interestingly enough - everyone who I met in reality matched up very well with what I had thought they were like on this site!
Now it's Gunks season - anyone heading up this way, drop me a PM!

hey all had a great time last weekend, I got out to the campsite on friday night to say hi to everyone that was there. so great to meet many of you.
I just have one question.....How was G feeling on sat morning? and did anyone take him up on the "roomy" tent offer?
didn't get out there on sat as I was bagged and just wanted sleep. I'll look into setting something up in the rockies for later in the summer maybe...
as far as the cost of the site goes...meh whatever, the money was spent quite a while ago, so don't worry about it yall. just don'\t forget this little canuck the next time he comes into your home state to do some climbing.
