Description:

This seems too different from "Howdy Dude" to be neglected as just a variation. The start onto the overhang face is the crux, with a short vertical and horizontal crack together, but little else to help get up onto the Trail-side face directly. There is a small pocket up to the right on the edge, a small side-pull atop the crack and a tiny crimp higher above right, and a shallow pocket above left good for one finger for one second. If you do get both feet onto the face, it is still thin going to the larger ledge. Above there is all 5.9 sloped "holds" until you get onto the more layered top face. (Rating confirmed by a 5.13 climber who had just done "Major Dude")

4 out of 5 stars Tough Start!

The start is an overhang with almost nothing for your feet, and once you do get up doing a layback move, there are only a few TINY pockets for your fingers until you get up onto the first ledge. Easier start to the left. Hang the toprope on the big tree at the top just to the right of Howdy Dude. The start is 5.10 I would agree, but the rest is 5.8/9.
